Recorder's Notes Mahalah Canning was born in Bagnor and married stonemason Thomason Thorn, living first in Oxford Rd, Speen, then Bartholomew Rd miving to Ashcroft, the house and yard in Newtown Rd next to the Cemetery. Ernest Ralph was a stonemason living in Queen's Rd in 1911 with wife Ethel and baby. He was also licensee at the Rokeby Arms, Newtown Rd. He served in the Yeomanry pre WW1 for 3 years and then was conscripted to the Royal Berks Regt in 1916. He was killed in France when his tent was hit during the night after the battle behind the frontline. His wife took over the Rokeby Arms for the duration of the War and remarried. His name is on the Newbury War Memorial for which his father was stonemason.He is also on the memorial in East Ilsley church where he married. THE LATE MR. THOMAS THORN
MORE THAN FITY YEARS IN BUSINESS


We regret to announce the death of Mr. Thomas Thorn, which occurred on Thursday at his residence, "Ashcroft," Newtown-road, Newbury, at the age of 76 years. More than 50 years ago he founded the firm of Messrs. Thorn and Son, stone and monumental masons. He was very fond of his garden and made it his chief hobby. A quiet, home-loving man, he got about very little.


The funeral took place on Monday, the first part of the service being at St. John's Church. The Vicar, the Rev E.H. Stenning officiated. The interment was in the Old Cemetery, Newton-road.


The mourners were; Mrs. Thorn (widow), Mr. A. Thorn and Mr. F. Thorn (sons), Mrs. T. A. Thorn (daughter-in-law), Mrs Gudgen and Miss Evelyn Thorn (daughters)Mr. William Thorn, Mr. Fred Thorn, Mr. Charlie Thorn and Mr. George Thom (brothers), Mr. and Mrs. W. Bailey (brother-in-law and sister), Mrs. Fred Thorn (sister-in-law).


Among others also noticed in church and at the graveside were Mr. R.H. Jeeves, Mr. L.W. Thom„ Mr. John Freeman, Mrs. Cottrell, Mrs. Harry James, Mrs. Walter Church, Miss Grimes, Miss Lobb, Mrs Hedges (Caversham), Mr. Pavier, the Misses Hodgetts, Mr. H.C.Hodge, Mr. and Mrs. Swain, and among the members of staff were Messrs. Maurice Chivers, William New and Cecil Fry.

Wreaths were sent by his wife; Tom and Flo; Aunt Si; and Syd; Olive, Vera, Vorman, Stella and Joan (grandchildren); Bob, Gladys and Peter (grandchildren); Mrs. Burgess; Mrs. Cottrell; Mr. and Mrs. May; Eve and Rhoda; Charlie, Lizzie and Ivy; Fred and Polly; Mr. and Mrs. Chandler (Reading) ; Ethel and Margie; Bill and Nellie; Albert and Ethel; Kate and Walter; Alf; Fred, Norah and Boys; Mr. Wilkes, Ada and George; Mr. Cook and Family; Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Squire; E. Etheridge; Maurice, William and Cecil; Mrs. Grimes, Vi and Ron; Mr. and. Mrs. Swain and family; Daisy and Doily.

Thomas Thorn (1855-1931)
Thomas Thorn was born in 1855 the second son of Augustin and Mary nee White.

1871 census he was living with his parents at Westfields, Newbury. Also at home were his siblings William b 1853, Alfred b 1857, Mary Jane b 1859, Edgar b 1861, Frederick b 1865, Charles b 1867 and Kate b 1869. He married Mahalah Canning in 1879, father Moses Canning and on 1891 census was living in Oxford Cottage, Oxford Road with their children Daisy B b 1880, Thomas A b 1882, Earnest R b 1885, Albert b 1888, Frederick C b 1891.

Thomas' occupation given as Stone mason.

By 1901 they had moved to Ashcroft, Newtown Road. Children living at home were Daisy B, Thomas A, Earnest A, Albert, and Frederick. They had been joined by Evelyn b 1893. Also on the census was John Thorn, a visitor from Windsor b 1895. Thomas, Thomas A and Ernest R were all recorded as Stone masons. In March 1911 Mahalah died and on the census that year Thomas is recorded as a widower. Still living at home were Albert, Frederick and Eveline. Albert is a carpenter, Frederick and Thomas are stone masons although Thomas is also described as a sculptor. Eveline is single with no occupation. They are still living on Newtown Road.

Thomas died in 1931 at Ashcroft, Newtown Road.

Thomas Thorn supervised the making of newbury's War Memorial. He was married to Mahalah Thorn and their son Ralph Ernest Thorn was killed in World War One.

Nb. In 1913 Thomas married Edith Adrianna Laker in Portsmouth. She died in 1941 and is buried in NRC. At the time she was living at 61 Newtown Road (Ashcroft). See her record
