Recorder's Notes Mahalah Canning was born in Bagnor and married stonemason Thomason Thorn, living first in Oxford Rd, Speen, then Bartholomew Rd miving to Ashcroft, the house and yard in Newtown Rd next to the Cemetery. Ernest Ralph was a stonemason living in Queen's Rd in 1911 with wife Ethel and baby. He was also licensee at the Rokeby Arms, Newtown Rd. He served in the Yeomanry pre WW1 for 3 years and then was conscripted to the Royal Berks Regt in 1916. He was killed in France when his tent was hit during the night after the battle behind the frontline. His wife took over the Rokeby Arms for the duration of the War and remarried. His name is on the Newbury War Memorial for which his father was stonemason.He is also on the memorial in East Ilsley church where he married. MAHALAH THORN

The funeral of the late Mrs. Thorn, of Ashcroft, Newtown road, who passed away on the 19th inst., at the age of 51 years, took place on Friday. The first part of the burial service was at St. John's Church, the Vicar (Rev. R. Wickham Legg) officiating. The coffin, of polished oak and brass mountings, was borne to the church on a hand bier under a canopy of floral tributes.

The mourners included the husband, Mrs. H. R. Rowell and Miss D.E. Thom (daughters), Messrs. T.A. Thorn, R.E. Thorn, A. Thorn, F.C. Thorn (sons) Mr. H. R. Rowell (son-in-law), Mrs. T.A. Thorn (daughter-in-law), Ann, Emma, and Alice (sisters), William, Charlie, Fred, Alfred and Walter (brothers-in-law), Kate, Lizzie and Nellie (sisters-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. Thomas of Windsor, Mr. R. Hood, Mr. A. J. Bailey, Mr. W.J. Taylor, and others.

 "Until the day break." In memorium of Mahalah the beloved wife of Thomas Thom at rest Feb. 19th 1911 aged 51 years. "I will lay me down in peace and take my rest."

Mahalah Thorn nee Canning 

Mahalah Canning married Thomas Thorn 1855-1931) in 1879, father Moses Canning and on 1891 census they were living in Oxford Cottage, Oxford Road with their children Daisy B b 1880, Thomas A b 1882, Earnest R b 1885, Albert b 1888, Frederick C b 1891. Thomas' occupation given as Stone mason.

By 1901 they had moved to Ashcroft, Newtown Road. Children living at home were Daisy B, Thomas A, Earnest A, Albert, and Frederick. They had been joined by Evelyn b 1893. Also on the census was John Thorn, a visitor from Windsor b 1895. Thomas, Thomas A and Ernest R were all recorded as Stone masons.

In March 1911 Mahalah died and on the census that year Thomas is recorded as a widower. Thomas is also described as a sculptor. Malalah was living at Ashcroft, Newtown Road when she died.
