Passive Resistance
Venue: The Phoenix Theatre, Newtown Road Newbury
Saturday, April 14, 2018 - Sunday, April 15, 2018

A new play about a mass protest that began in the autumn of 1903. The protest was against aspects of the 1902 Education Act. Local residents, many of whom are buried in Newtown Road Cemetery found themselves in court for refusal to pay their rates. The bailiffs were sent in and their household goods were auctioned in the streets.

Now entirely forgotten this protest led to the landslide victory of the Liberal Party in the1906 General Election.
