About the Friends of Newtown Road Cemetery

The Friends were formed by the Newbury Town Council in 2009 as part of a concerted effort to get the Newtown Road Cemetery re-opened to the public. Our first chairperson was Dr. Elizabeth Capewell who, along with the early members of the committee laid the foundation of what was to come. Their efforts allowed the formation of various groups within the Friends such as the History Research Group, The Nature Group and the Monuments Recording Group. The teams behind the various groups have provided us with considerable research in many different areas form the personal histories of those buried in the Cemetery, information on the twenty Commonwealth War Graves and numerous war memorials. The initial aim of getting the cemetery in a safe condition to allow public access was attained in 2012 and the cemetery is now open to the public daily (except Christmas Day) from 10am to 3pm. We are always looking for further assistance in research, public relations and recording the graves. If you feel able to help or just want to know more, please contact the committee on committee@fnrcnewbury.org.uk.
