| Recorder's Notes | Mahalah Canning was born in Bagnor and married stonemason Thomason Thorn, living first in Oxford Rd, Speen, then Bartholomew Rd miving to Ashcroft, the house and yard in Newtown Rd next to the Cemetery. Ernest Ralph was a stonemason living in Queen's Rd in 1911 with wife Ethel and baby. He was also licensee at the Rokeby Arms, Newtown Rd. He served in the Yeomanry pre WW1 for 3 years and then was conscripted to the Royal Berks Regt in 1916. He was killed in France when his tent was hit during the night after the battle behind the frontline. His wife took over the Rokeby Arms for the duration of the War and remarried. His name is on the Newbury War Memorial for which his father was stonemason.He is also on the memorial in East Ilsley church where he married.
