William Walter Kimber (1822-1898)
He was born on 13 April 1822 and baptised on 21 June in the same year at the Presbyterian Upper Meeting House, Newbury. He was the son of William Wailer Kimber and his wife Mary. His father was a Dairyman and Shopkeeper based in Northcroft Lane.
in 1849 William married Betsy Whale in Newbury and after his parents and his sister Sarah moved to No.1 Kimber's Almshouses, he took over the dairy business in Northcroft Lane. By 1871 three children are recorded: daughter Ellen (born 1852) and two sons William Wailer (b. 1855) and Henry John (b. 1859). William Wailer, now aged 42 years, was trading as a Butcher from 42 Northcroft Lane, with his wife Betsy, son William Wailer (aged 16) a Carpenter's Apprentice and son Henry John (aged 12) an Errand Boy. Also recorded in the 1871 census were William and Charles Whale, the sons of Betsy's brother, Henry John Whale, also employed as Errand Boys. By 1881 William has retired from the butchery business and was living with Betsy in West Mills and by 1891 they had moved to the Almshouses in Enborne Road.
He died aged 75 years on 6 January 1898 and was buried on 8 January 1898. Death index records that he died aged 74 years.
