For eight years he acted as an honorary collector for the Hospital Contributory Scheme, Newbury East Ward, and was keenly interested in the work.
The funeral service was held at St. John’s Church on Saturday, the Vicar (Rev. E. H. Stenning) officiating, and the interment was in the Old Cemetery, Newtown-road. The mourners were Mrs. R. Chalk (widow), Mr. R. J. Chalk (son), Misses K. and M. Chalk (daughters) Miss Chalk (sister), Mrs. R. J. Chalk (daughter-in-law), Mrs. W. Spreadbury, Mrs. T. Razey, and Mrs. G. Hedges (sisters-in-law), Mr. G. Hedges and Mr. W. Spreadbury (brothers-in-law), Mr. W. Razey and Miss D. Razey (nephew and niece), Mrs. F. Anthony (Andover). Amongst others noticed in the church and at the graveside were Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Witts (the Mayor and Mayoress) and Miss E. Witts, Mr. J. R. Yarr (Head Postmaster) and “there then follows a long list of other mourners”.
Wreaths and flowers were from: His loving Wife, Katie and Maggie; Jack and Alice; Annie; Will, Lizzie and Gladys (Hungerford); Tom, Emm, Doris and Bill (Hungerford); George and Mabel (Hungerford); (then there follows a long list of the many people who sent flowers).
The coffin, which was of plain unpolished oak with brass fittings, was inscribed “Robert Chalk, died February 16th, 1932. Aged 65 years.” The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. T. Plumb.
