York Road Death Mrs. Hannah Chalk
The death took place on December 26th [1955] of Mrs. Hannah Chalk, 37 York Road, Newbury. A remarkable woman for her age – she was nearly 91 – her keen and retentive mind enabled her to maintain a close interest in town affairs which she loved to discuss with her friends.
She also kept up-to-date with national news and seldom missed voting at either borough or general elections. Of an independent spirit, although well cared for by her devoted daughters, she insisted on taking full share of the household duties until recently, she regretted that she was unable to do more. She had a most likeable nature. When taken out in her chair, she always sat up as straight as a die and would never have a cushion behind her. Widow of Mr. Robert Chalk, who died in 1932, she is survived by a son and two daughters.
