ALFRED JOSEPH GLOVER
The Late Mr. A. J. GLOVER.
The funeral of Mr. Alfred Joseph Glover, whose lamented death we recorded last week, took place on Saturday. The funeral procession left the residence of the deceased in Northbrook-street shortly after three. The hearse was followed by two mourning coaches containing relatives of the deceased as follows: — Mr. Glover, Mr. Staples, Mr. Ingram, Mr. T. Glover, Mr. W. Glover, Mr. S. Ledsham, Mr. E. L. Staples, Mr. J. Staples, Mr. C. Dolton, Mr. C. Lucas, Mr. Scroggs, and Mr. Frank Adnams, Dr. Ryott and Mr. Birch.
A large number of gentlemen, including the Mayor and members of the Corporation, members of the Newbury Cricket Club, and Directors of the Literary Institution, also showed respect by joining the procession, and on reaching the Cemetery they formed two lines, between which the coffin containing the remains of the deceased were carried. The corpse was met by the Rev. E. W. Shalders and the Rev. B. Smith, the latter reading the service at the chapel, and the former at the grave. There were a large number of persons present, whose emotion in view of the solemn occurrence showed the impression the event of such a sadden removal in the full vigour of manhood had made upon the public mind. The closed shutters anti drawn blinds along the route, were, in addition to the numbers present at the cemetery, impressive evidences of the deep respect in which the deceased was held.
The body was laid in the family vault of Mr. Staples, and the funeral arrangements were efficiently conducted by Mr. Wintle. We may add that about a score of beautiful wreaths were sent by mourning friends, one consisting of specially choice flowers, being from the members of the Newbury Cricket Club. Sermons at which impressive allusion to the event was made, were preached in the Congregational Church on Sunday morning, and at the Wesleyan Chapel in the evening.
