WILLIAM NUTLEY
THE LATE MR. NUTLEY.
-An old and respected inhabitant of the town has passed away from our midst in the person of Mr. Nutley, who died on Monday, at the ripe age of 81 years. He was the architect of his own fortune, and was often heard to state how he entered Newbury when a young man with only a few coppers in his pocket.
Referring to the deceased gentleman, a correspondent thus writes:—" There are few men, perhaps, who more justly deserve a generous tribute of respect than the good-hearted townsman who was so lately among us. Although through life he constantly threw the whole force of his energy and capacity into his own business, and did not, I believe, ever hold office in the town, Mr. Nutley was ever on the side of progress and improvement, and rejoiced in promoting the general welfare.
"He materially assisted with his purse and influence in developing the railway enterprize, which he considered would confer much advantage on the town; and his many acts of benevolence were always heartily and cheerfully rendered."
The funeral of the deceased gentleman will take place at the cemetery on Saturday next, at half-past one.
