THE LATE MR. CHARLES NUTLEY — Our obituary of to-day records the death of Mr. Charles Nutley, of Bartholomew-street, who, if he had lived until Sunday next, would have been 60 years of age. The deceased was son of the late Mr. William Nutley, who died on the 13th of June, 1881, at the advanced age of 81.

Like his father, Mr. Charles Nutley took no active part in public life, but as the owner of considerable public-houses and other property, was ready to assist with his purse and influence any scheme for the improvement of the town and neighbourhood. He was fond of out-door sports, more particularly shooting, but his ill-health has for some time prevented his engaging in his favourite pastime.

He leaves a widow, two sons, and four daughters, one of the latter being married. His eldest son is an undergraduate of Cambridge University.

The funeral, we believe, will take place on Saturday next, at two o'clock at the Cemetery.

Established at 50 Bartholomew Street in 1841 by William Nutley, the Phoenix Brewery became one of 10 brewers operating in the town of Newbury by 1870.

It was also known as Nutley’s Steam Brewery due possibly to its long association with the Nutley family, first William then Charles managing the business.  The latter sold out to Herbert John Finn in 1893.
