PHYLLIS MARY WHEELER SALVATION ARMY FUNERAL There was an impressive demonstration yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon when the local members of the Salvation Army accorded full honours to a young adherent, Phyllis Wheeler, daughter of the late Mr. Ernest Wheeler, of York-road. Assembling outside the house, a short service was conducted, a hymn being sung, prayer offered and Scripture by the Adjutant. A procession was formed, and headed by the band solemnly playing the Dead March in "Saul." The banner was tied with white ribbon, and the members wore white armlets. At the end of Newtown-road cemetery a short service was held in the chapel, the hymn sung being "Shall we gather at the river," the last verse of which was rendered at the grave by six Sunday scholars. The mourners were step-father, mother, brother, sisters, and other members of the family. Nearly a thousand people witnessed the ceremony. A large number of floral offerings was contributed. Mr. Benham of Mill-Land, carried out the arrangements. Newbury Weekly News 17 January 1924 Buried 16 January 1924 aged 14 Bk 1917 p. 086 no. 10287 from 25 York Road.
