THE LATE MR. THOMAS MATHEWS
By the death of Mr. Thomas Mathews, at his residence, the Uplands, on Thursday, another of the old school of townsmen has been removed. Mr. Mathews, who was born in 1823 at Boxford Mill, then worked by his father. and at the age of thirteen came into Newbury as an apprentice to Mr. George Buckeridge, grocer, of the Bridge (now Messrs. Church Brothers). He subsequently walked over to the Old Bank, on the opposite side of the street, entering as a junior - clerk, and remained in the service of the firm for about 45 years, rising in course of time to the responsible office of cashier. which be held till the transference of the business to the Capital and Counties Bank, when he retired into private life, and for several years enjoyed a well-earned leisure.
Mr. Mathews was associated with Messrs. Bunny. Slocock and Matthews during the palmy days of the Old Bank, and at one time knew as much about the commercial side of Newbury life as any man then living. He was very conservative in his habits, and boasted of having taken one daily paper for nearly half-a-century. He had been ailing ever since his retirement, although be was able to get down into town and chat with old friends over the days that are past. He was out on the Tuesday. but died on Thursday at the age of 76. He leaves a widow and several grown-up sons and daughter.
The funeral took place on Monday morning at the Cemetery, the officiating clergymen being the Rector of Newbury. and the Rev. E. Idé Mack. The mourners were Mr. and Mrs William Mathews, Mr. Charles Mathews, Mr. Frank Masters, Mr. and Mrs Bradfield, Mr. Fred Masters and Mr. John Salway. There were no flowers by request of the deceased.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. G. Wintle, of Northbrook-street.
