Recorder's Notes | Edward Samuel was born to Journeyman Bricklayer Frederick James and Jane, nee Hayward, later Gibbons, of Cheap St, Newbury. He married Ann Maria Edwards daughter of an Agricultural Labourer of Sanham Green, Hungerford in 1879. Before marriage she was a Farm Worker, living in Lower Green, Inkpen with her widowed mother and siblings. Edward & Ann had 9 children. In 1881 they lived at 7, Brixton Rise,Cheap St, Newbury and he was working as a Pig Butcher. By 1901, they were at 2 Industrial Cottages, Jubilee Rd and he was working as a Bricklayer. By 1911 he was a Builder. They moved to 39, Greenham Rd by 1827 but he died at Quarrystone, Burghclere n 1933. He left £1263 to son Albert James, Platelayer. Edward Samuel Chivers born 1860 in Newbury, parents Frederick and Jane See Frederick for 1861 census.

On 1871 census living with his parents, Frederick and Jane at West Fields. Also in the household a step brother Frederick John Gibbons, brothers James aged 16, **Alfred Phillip aged 12, Edward Samuel aged 11 and sisters **Sarah Jane aged 7 and Kate Maria aged 2.
1879 married Ann Maria Edwards
By 1881 he is married to **Ann Maria, and is living at 7 Brixton Rise, Newbury. They have a son, Arthur R born in 1881. Edward gives pig butcher as his occupation. On 1891 census he is a bricklayer living in Industrial Cottage, Victoria Terrace, Greenham. Wife Ann Maria, aged 32 yrs. Sons Arthur R 10, ** Edward George 9, Albert G 7,** Ben 7 and Frederick J 3.Also daughter **Sarah Jane 1. On 1901 census the address is Industrial Cottages, Jubilee Road. Now aged 41 he is still a bricklayer, his wife Ann Maria is aged 42. Sons Edward George, 19, is a bricklayer's labourer; Albert J, 17, is a labourer at the paper mill; Ben, 14, is a grocer's errand boy. Frederick J, 13, Alfred P, 8, are scholars.** Harry ,3, died later that year. Daughters Sarah J, 11, and Ann Maria, 5, are scholars.
By 1911 the address is now 2 Industrial Cottages, Jubilee Road. Still a bricklayer .Wife Ann Maria is 52. Sons Edward George, 29, is a house painter; Ben, 24, is a Bricklayer's labourer. Frederick J, 23, is a bench sawyer; Alfred P, 18, is an ironmonger's porter. Daughter Ann Maria, 15, is a general domestic servant. There is also a visitor, Ellen Monger, 20, also a general domestic servant.
