Recorder's Notes | The Todd sisters were born in St Peter Port, Guernsey to Henry, a painter & glazier, who died soon after the youngest was born, and Amelia, a school teacher. After Henry's death. Amelia took the family to Alderney where she was a teacher. The family later moved to Greenham where Amelia and daughters taught at Greenham Schools. Hannah lived in Pound St and taught in the National School. Later the sisters lived together with other spinster teacher relatives in Craven Road. On retirement the three sisters lived in St George's Avenue, Newbury. Hannah and Jane were living there when they died. Elizabeth moved to Clevedon and died there in 1939. Her Will gives her date of death as 16th Sept, not 17th as recorded by Mrs P & in her MI. Sources: Mrs P's record for MI; census records in Ancestry for ages and confirmation of dates of death. |

Transciption: | GRAVE OF THE MONTH Jane was born in St Peter Port, Guernsey, daughter of Henry Fisher and Amelia (née Perry) Todd. By 1851 her father had died, and her mother was a school mistress on Alderney. Jane was still living on Alderney with her mother, brother Alfred, and sister Elizabeth Alice. By 1871 her mother had taken a job at the National School at Greenham. Jane was living there with her mother and older sister Amelia Priaulx Todd. By 1887 she was sharing a house in Craven Road with her sister Hanna and another teacher Clementina Calisé, when their live-in servant, Mary Ann Porter, caught fire while reading late at night and died. Jane gave evidence at the inquest. By 1921 Jane was living on St John’s Road with sisters Hanna and Elisabeth Alice, all retired teachers. Later the sisters moved to the new houses in St George’s Avenue, built as Homes for Heroes after WW1. Jane died there at No 20 in 1933. |
