LUCY MEADOWS nee Mayes

 

Lucy was born on 14 July 1849 at Fletton near Peterborough.

Q3 1849 Peterborough 15 334.

She was baptised on 8 July 1849 at Peterborough. Her parents were John & Elizabeth Mayes. One of her sisters was Annie Walker nee Mayes (Ref: 12639).

 

In 1851 she was 1years old & living at Railway Cottages, Fletton with her parents & sister Annie, 3. Father, 28, is a Railway Porter & Mother 27.

 

In 1861 they are at the same address but the father, 36, is now a Potato Dealer. Mother is 37; Lucy,11; Annie, 13; Sarah, 8 & Elizabeth,4.

 

Lucy married Martin Meadows from Twywell, Northants on 20 December 1869 in Rotherhithe, London where they were both living at the time.

Q4 1869 Rotherhithe 1d 960.

 

1871 saw them living in Holme, Huntingdonshire. Martin, 24, was an Agricultural labourer & Lucy, 22. Their first child, Mildred, was 6 months old.

 

They then moved to Holbeach by 1881 where Martin, 34, was a Railway Porter & Lucy, 31 with Mildred, 10; Ernest, 6; Frank, 3 & Mabel, 1.

 

In 1891the family were living in Stukeley Road, Holbeach & Martin, 44, was now a Railway Agent & Lucy, 41. Ernest, 16 & a Corn Porter; Mabel, 11; Martin, 9; Harry, 7; Phyllis, 4; Phil, 3 & Fred, 1.

 

They were living in Granmore Lane, Holbeach in 1901 & Martin, 54, had become a Potato Merchant & Lucy was 54. Martin, 16 & a Labourer; Harry, 17 & an Apprentice Printer; Philip, 13 & Fred, 11.

 

In 1911 they were at Ladysmith House, Granmore Lane, Holbeach. Martin, 65, is now a Farmer & a Potato Merchant & Lucy is 61. Phillip, 23, is an Upholsterer; Fred, 22, is a Labourer on a Fruit farm. Grandson Leslie Meadows a, 7, is also living with them as well as their daughter, Phyllis Mills, 25, with her son George Martin Mills aged 3 months.

 

Lucy’s son Martin was killed in WW1 at Arras on 2 April 1917.

Her husband, Martin, died 26 December 1929 at Holbeach. (Q4 1929 Holbeach 7a 430.

 

The family were at the same address in 1921. Martin, 75, is a Small holder of land & Lucy is 72. Phillip, 34, is an Upholsterer; Daughter Phyllis Mills, 35, & her husband, John, 34, & a Coal Merchant, are living there with their sons: George, 10 & Harold, 8.

 

Following her husband’s death, Lucy moved to live with her daughter Mabel at 113, Andover Road, Newbury. Mabel had married her cousin, Harold Mayes Walker (Ref: 1115) – he was Annie Walker’s son (Ref: 12639). Lucy died there on 14 May 1933, aged 84.

(Q2 1933 Newbury 2c 287). She was buried in NRC on 17 May 1933.
