James Tennant
1853-1932
James, his parents, siblings and early life:
James was born on the 6th May 1853 in Newbury the son of James and Avis Tennant (nee Dore) who were married on the 11th February 1844 at St Laurence Reading Berkshire.
His father James was a Shoemaker, born c1815 in Newbury the son of George and Mary Tennant (nee King). He died aged 46 in 1861 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6th September.
His mother Avis was born c1821 in Welford Berkshire the daughter of Thomas and Hannah Dore. She died aged 73 in 1892 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd April.
James and Avis also had the following children:

Priscilla 1845 (died aged 10 months in 1846)
Hannah Maria 1847 (died aged 6 in 1853 buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th July)
Martha 1849
George c1850
Stillborn child born 1855 (buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th October)
Charles 1859 (died aged 2 in 1862 buried as Ernest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st April)
In 1851 James (36), Avis (32) and their children Mary Ann (6), Hannah (4), Martha (2) and George (1 month) were living in Back Lane, Newbury.
In 1861 James (8) was recorded living with his parents and siblings in Back Lane, Newbury.
In 1871 James (19), was recorded as a Painter, living in Back Lane with his mother Avis (51), a Shoe Binder, his sister Mary Ann (26) a Domestic Cook and a Lodger.
The 1881 census records James (27), as a Paper Hanger living at 10 Bedford Place, Newbury with his mother.
James in later life:
James married Elizabeth Heath in 1881.The marriage was registered in Newbury. (Possibly married in Enborne as this was where Elizabeth was recorded living in 1881, Elizabeth was baptised in Culham Oxfordshire on the 8th May 1851 the daughter of Ambrose and Martha Heath (nee Horn) who were married on the 11th July 1846 in Shrivenham Berkshire)
James and Elizabeth had two daughters, Daisy Elizabeth born on the 14th November 1882 and Mabel Mary born on the 6th July 1885 both girls were born in Newbury.
In 1891 James (37) was working as a Paper Hanger, living with Elizabeth (38), Daisy E (8), Mabel M (5) and his mother Avis (71) at Caretaker House, Odd Fellows Hall, Newbury
The family were still living at Caretaker House in 1901, James (46) was recorded as a self-employed Painter and Paper Hanger, Daisy (18) was recorded as a Dressmaker and Mabel (16) was recorded as a Draper’s Apprentice.
The 1911 census records James (57) as a Painter and Decorator (own account), living at 24 Craven Street, Newbury with Elizabeth (58) their daughter Daisy (27) a Dressmaker and a boarder.
Elizabeth died aged 64 on the 7th July 1915, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9th July.
James died aged 79 on the 29th October 1932, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd November.
Their daughters continued to live at 24 Craven Road Newbury until their deaths.
Daisy Elizabeth Tennant died aged 78 on the 13th October 1961 at Nazareth House, Stockcross, Newbury
Mabel Mary Tennant died aged 76 on the 30th December 1961 in Battle Hospital, Reading, Berkshire
Probate: Tennant James of 24 Craven-road Newbury Berkshire died 29th October 1932 Probate Oxford 14th November to Daisy Elizabeth Tennant spinster. Effects: £427 12s 8d
