Elizabeth Tennant
1851-1915
Elizabeth, her parents, siblings and early life:
Elizabeth Heath was born in Oxfordshire on the 18th April 1851, she was baptised on the 8th May 1851 in Culham, the daughter of Ambrose and Martha Heath (nee Horn) who were married on the 11th July 1846 in Shrivensham Berkshire.
Her father Ambrose was a Gardener he was born c1822 in Berkley Somerset. He died aged 73 in 1893 and was buried on the 15th November at in South Hinksey.
Her mother Martha was born c1822 in Shrivensham. She died aged 45 in 1868 and was buried on the 15th January in South Hinksey
Elizabeth’s siblings were:
Ellen Horn baptised 15th October 1843 in Shrivensham (born before Martha married Ambrose)
Mary Ann baptised 27th June 1847 in Culham
Isabella baptised 3rd June 1849 in Culham
Alfred baptised 20th Marth 1853 in Wytham

Henry born c1857
Edward Ambrose born c1861 baptised 14th April 1861 in South Hinksey
The 1851 census records Ambrose (27) as a Gentleman’s Gardener living in Culham, Oxfordshire with Martha (28) a Dressmaker and their children Ellen (7), Mary Ann (3) and Isabella (1).
By 1861 the family had moved to New Hinksey.
In 1871 Elizabeth (19) was working as a Seamstress living at 2 Lake Street, South Hinksey with her father Ambrose (48) her sister Mary Ann (23), a Dressmaker and her brothers Henry (14) and Edward (10).
The 1881 census records Elizabeth (28) as a Parlour Maid living in Enborne Road, Newbury (The home of Mr Edward Gardener (48), Rector of Newbury and his wife Emma (36).
Elizabeth:
Elizabeth married James Tennant in 1881 (possibly in Enborne as this was where Elizabeth was recorded living in 1881), marriage registered in Newbury. (James was born on the 6th May 1853 in Newbury the son of James and Avis Tennant (nee Dore)
James and Elizabeth had two daughters, Daisy Elizabeth was born on the 14th November 1882 and Mabel Mary was born on the 6th July 1885, both girls were born in Newbury.
In 1891 Elizabeth (38) was living at Caretaker House, Odd Fellows Hall, Newbury with James (37), who was working as a Paper Hanger and their daughters, Daisy E (8) and Mabel M (5) also living with them was Elizabeth’s mother-in-law Avis (71).
The family were still living at Caretaker House in 1901, James (46) was recorded as a self-employed Painter and Paper Hanger, Daisy (18) was recorded as a Dressmaker and Mabel (16) was recorded as a Draper’s Apprentice.
The 1911 census records James (57) as a Painter and Decorator (own account), living at 24 Craven Street, Newbury with Elizabeth (58) their daughter Daisy (27), a Dressmaker and a boarder.
Elizabeth died aged 64 on the 7th July 1915, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9th July.
James died aged 79 on the 29th October 1932, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd November.
After their father’s death the girls continued to live at 24 Craven Road, Newbury until their deaths in 1961.
Daisy Elizabeth Tennant died aged 78 on the 13th October 1961 at Nazareth House Stockcross Newbury
Mabel Mary Tennant died aged 76 on the 30th December 1961 in Battle Hospital Reading Berkshire
Probate: Tennant Elizabeth of 24 Craven-street Newbury Berkshire (wife of James Tennant) died 7th July 1915 Administration Oxford 16th August to the said James Tennant house decorator. Effects: £205 0s 10d
