Jane Crosswell was born on the 11th April 1798 in Newbury Berkshire she was baptised on the 28th May 1798 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Crosswell (nee Mills) who were married on the 31st May 1784 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (surname recorded as Crasswell on Hardwicke Marriage Index)

Thomas and Elizabeth also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury:

Sarah baptised on the 25th December 1784

Mary baptised on the 5th September 1788

John baptised on the 11th June 1790

Elizabeth baptised on the 16th March 1792

Charlotte baptised on the 25th December 1793

Richard baptised on the 9th December 1795

Thomas born 8th March 1800, baptised on the 25th December 1806

James born 31st July 1802, baptised on the 27th August 1802

William born 23rd May 1804, baptised on the 20th June 1804

Hannah born 24th October 1807, baptised on the 15th November 1807

 

In the 1815 census of Newbury Jane’s father Thomas (50), a Flax Dresser, (worked for Mr Childs) her mother Elizabeth (51) and her siblings, Elizabeth (24), Charlotte (22), Richard (19), Thomas (14), William (11) and Hannah (9) were recorded living in Hamans Buildings Greenham Lane Newbury (surname recorded as Crasswell).  Jane was not recorded in this census.

Jane’s father died aged 58 in 1822 he was buried on the 28th June at St Nicolas Newbury.

Jane gave birth to a son, George, born c1818 in Newbury, baptised on the 25th January 1818 at St Mary’s Greenham Berkshire.

She married Thomas Lloyd on the 18th September 1821 at St Nicolas Church Newbury and they had a daughter Hannah, born c1829, baptised on the 15th October 1829 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

In 1841 Thomas (40) was working as a Gardener and was living in Back Lane Newbury with Jane (40) and their daughter Hannah (11). Living next door was Jane’s widowed mother, her married sister Hannah Husband (recorded as Ann), her brother-in-law William Husband and her niece Isabella Husband.

Jane’s mother died aged 86 in 1844 she was buried on the 14th February at St Nicolas Newbury  

Jane was widowed in 1849 Thomas died aged 49 he was buried on the 3rd February at St Nicolas Newbury.

In 1851 Jane (53) and her daughter Hannah (21) were still living in Back Lane. Hannah was working as a Dressmaker.

Jane died aged 60 on the 16th March 1858 she was laid to rest in a private grave in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th March. Jane’s daughter-in-law Elizabeth Crosswell died in 1862 she was buried with Jane. Her son George died on the 16th June 1865 and his daughter (from 2nd marriage) Jane Elizabeth died on the 10th November 1865 aged 8 months, both were laid to rest next to Jane and Elizabeth.
