Henry Rowell

Henry, his parents, and siblings:

Henry was baptised on the 16^th February 1823, in Greenham, Berkshire, the son of Robert and Elizabeth Rowell (nee Smith) who were married on the 2^nd January 1819, in St Dunstan in the West London (Robert was a widower, see below).

Henry’s father Robert was born c1784. He married Sarah Smith on the 6^th April 1816, at St Marylebone, Westminster. Sarah was recorded as a minor, from Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of Thomas Smith. (Sarah was baptised on the 29^th April 1796 at St Nicolas, Church, Newbury, the daughter of Thomas and Hannah Smith) Robert and Sarah had a son, Thomas Robert, baptised on the 28^th April 1818, in St Marylebone, Westminster. Sarah died aged 22, the following month. She was buried on the 13^th May 1818, at St Nicolas, Newbury. (burial note records: Sarah Rowell aged 22, of London, Oxford Street, 6 Winstey Street, wife of Robert, a Brewer)

Henry’s mother Elizabeth was born on the 12^th May 1800, she was baptised on the 30^th May 1800, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury the daughter of Thomas and Hannah Smith (she was Robert’s sister-in-law, the sister of his 1^st wife, Sarah Smith).

Robert and Elizabeth also had the following children:

William, born 19^th September, baptised 19^th October 1819, at St Marylebone, Westminster

John, baptised 8^th June 1821, at St Marylebone, Westminster (died 1834, in Speen)

Elizabeth Ann, baptised 15^th October 1824, at St Mary, Greenham

Frederick, born 22^nd October 1826, baptised 15^th December, at St Nicolas, Newbury (dad, a Brewer and Wine Merchant in Northbrook Street)

Jane, born 3^rd July 1828, baptised 11^th July, at St Nicolas, Newbury (dad a Brewer, in Northbrook St)

Hannah Maria, born 25^th September 1830, baptised 20^th October, at St Nicolas, Newbury (dad a Brewer in Northbrook Street)

Robert, baptised 6^th October 1833, at St Mary, Speenhamland (dad a Gentleman of Woodspeen)

Emma, born 9^th March, baptised 6^th May 1836, at St Mary, Speenhamland (dad a Gentleman of Woodspeen)

Robert died aged 55, on the 9^th February 1839, he was buried on the 13^th February, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

Elizabeth died aged 40 on the 12^th May 1840, at Waterloo Place, Speen. She was buried on the 18^th May, at St Mary, Speenhamland, Berkshire.

Henry in later life:

In 1841 Henry (19) was working as a Tea Dealer’s Servant, at 216 Strand, St Danes, Westminster.

The 1841 census records Henry’s siblings Ann (17), (Elizabeth Ann) Robert (6), and Emma (4), a living with their grandfather Thomas Smith (73), in Kennet House, Speen, Berkshire. Also recorded in the household were a housekeeper and two female servants.

In 1843 Henry’s grandad Thomas Smith died aged 75. He was buried on the 23^rd October 1843, at St Mary, Speenhamland. Thomas was extremely wealthy. He left a will naming Henry as one of his beneficiaries (probate dated 20^th January 1844).  (It seems that this will was contested as the Access to Archives website have a litigation record for Plaintiffs: Thomas Smith and others v Defendants: William Rowell, Henry, Rowell, Ann Rowell, Jane Rowell, Frederick Rowell, Robert Rowell, Emma Rowell, John Satchell the younger, Mary Ann Satchel, Robert Satchell, Ellen Satchell and John Satchell)

(Louisa Jane Guyatt was baptised on the 23^rd November 1827, in Hartley-Wespall, Hampshire, the daughter of Robert and Sabina Guyatt (nee Stone) who were married on the 15^th April 1819, in Hartley-Wespall).

The 1851 census records Henry (28) as formerly a Miller, living at 11 Shaw Crescent, Newbury, with Louisa Jane (28) and her sister Sabina Mary Guyatt (17).

Henry died aged 31, on the 15^th February 1854, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21^st February. (He shares a grave with his brother Frederick, buried 1870)

Louisa remarried in 1858 in Speenhamland, Newbury. He 2^nd husband was Richard Ebenezer Child. They had 3 children, Richard Evison, 1859, Robert Shannon, c1861 and Louisa Sarah, c1863, all born in Islington. Louisa Jane died aged 54, in 1882, in Islington.
