Frederick, his parents and siblings:
Frederick was born on the 22nd October 1826, he was baptised on the 15th December 1826, at St Nicolas, Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Robert and Elizabeth Rowell (nee Smith) who were married on the 2nd January 1819, in St Dunstan-in-the-West, London (Robert was a widower, see below).
Frederick’s father Robert was born c1784. He married Sarah Smith on the 6th April 1816, at St Marylebone, Westminster. Sarah was recorded as a minor, from Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of Thomas Smith. (Sarah was baptised on the 29th April 1796 at St Nicolas, Church, Newbury, the daughter of Thomas and Hannah Smith) Robert and Sarah had a son, Thomas Robert, baptised on the 28th April 1818, in St Marylebone, Westminster. Sarah died aged 22, the following month. She was buried on the 13th May 1818, at St Nicolas, Newbury. (burial note records: Sarah Rowell aged 22, of London, Oxford Street, 6 Winstey Street, wife of Robert, a Brewer) 
Frederick’s mother Elizabeth was born on the 12th May 1800, she was baptised on the 30th May 1800, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury the daughter of Thomas and Hannah Smith (she was Robert’s sister-in-law, the sister of his 1st wife, Sarah Smith). 
Robert and Elizabeth also had the following children:
William, born 19th September, baptised 19th October 1819, at St Marylebone, Westminster
John, baptised 8th June 1821, at St Marylebone, Westminster (died 1834, in Speen)
Henry, baptised 16th February 1823, at St Mary, Greenham
Elizabeth Ann, baptised 15th October 1824, at St Mary, Greenham
Jane, born 3rd July, baptised 11th July 1828, at St Nicolas, Newbury (dad a Brewer, in Northbrook St)
Hannah Maria, born 25th September 1830, baptised 20th October, at St Nicolas, Newbury (dad a Brewer in Northbrook Street)
Robert, baptised 6th October 1833, at St Mary, Speenhamland (dad a Gentleman of Woodspeen)
Emma, born 9th March, baptised 6th May 1836, at St Mary, Speenhamland (dad a Gentleman of Woodspeen)
Robert died aged 55, on the 9th February 1839, he was buried on the 13th February, at St Nicolas, Newbury.
Elizabeth died aged 40 on the 12th May 1840, at Waterloo Place, Speen. She was buried on the 18th May, at St Mary, Speenhamland, Berkshire.


Frederick in later life:
In 1841 Frederick (15) was recorded as a Butcher, living in Bermondsey Square, Bermondsey, Surrey.
The 1841 census records Frederick’s siblings Ann (17), (Elizabeth Ann) Robert (6), and Emma (4), a living with their grandfather Thomas Smith (73), in Kennet House, Speen, Berkshire. Also recorded in the household was a housekeeper and two female servants
In 1843 Frederick’s grandad Thomas Smith died aged 75. He was buried on the 23rd October 1843, at St Mary, Speenhamland. Thomas was extremely wealthy. He left a will naming Frederick as one of his beneficiaries (probate dated 20th January 1844).  (It seems that this will was contested as the Access to Archives website have a litigation record for Plaintiffs: Thomas Smith and others v Defendants: William Rowell, Henry, Rowell, Ann Rowell, Jane Rowell, Frederick Rowell, Robert Rowell, Emma Rowell, John Satchell the younger, Mary Ann Satchell, Robert Satchell, Ellen Satchell and John Satchell)

The 1851 census records Frederick (25) working as a Printer. He was recorded as a visitor at Bear Yard, Market Place, Newbury, Berkshire.
Frederick married Eliza Parr on the 31st July 1852, in Thatcham, Berkshire.
(Eliza was baptised on the 25th July1830, in Greenham, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Parr (nee Showell) who were married on the 7th June 1824, in Thatcham, Berkshire) 
Frederick and Eliza had a son, Henry Robert, born in 1853, in Enborne, Berkshire.
In 1858 Frederick was charged with using threatening language towards his widowed mother-in-law, Mrs. Parr. He was bound over to keep the peace towards Elizabeth Parr on the 26th February.
By 1861 Frederick and Eliza were living separately.
The 1861 census records Frederick (38) lodging in Northcroft Lane, Newbury, he was still working as a Printer.                                                                                                                           Eliza (30), a Dressmaker and her son Henry Robert (7) were recorded living in Westcombe Buildings, Northbrook Street, Newbury with her widowed mother Elizabeth Parr.
Frederick died aged 43, on the 10th July 1870, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13th July, with his brother Henry (buried 1854).
The 1871 census records Eliza (40) as a Beerhouse Keeper at 60, Bartholomew Street, Newbury. He son Henry Robert (18) an Engine Fitter, was recorded living with her.
Eliza died aged 47, on the 11th June 1878, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th June.
