Mary Pyke/Pike  c1834-1915

Mary, her parents, siblings and early life:

Mary was baptised on the 18^th May 1834, in Hurstbourne Tarrant, Hampshire, the daughter of Alexander and Sarah Day (nee Ball) who were married on the 19^th November 1831, in Hurstbourne Tarrant.

Mary’s father Alexander was born on the 4^th February 1801, he was baptised on the 7^th February 1801, in Hurstbourne Tarrant, the son of Stephen and Frances Day (nee Holdway) who were married on the 12^th November 1798, in Hurstbourne Tarrant. Alexander died aged 82 in 1884, in Hurstbourne Tarrant.

Mary’s mother Sarah was baptised on the 5^th February 1804, in St Mary Bourne, Hampshire the daughter of William and Mary Ball (nee Skeats) who were married on the 13^th October 1799, in St Mary Bourne. (William was from Barton) Sarah died aged 63, in 1867, in Hurstbourne Tarrant

The 1841 census records Mary (7), living in Hurstbourne Tarrant, with her father Alexander (35), an Agricultural Labourer, her mother Sarah (35) and her siblings, Hariot (8), (Harriet) Sarah (5), Ann (3) and Charles (1) (surname recorded as Vay on ancestry)

Mary in later life:

In 1851 Mary (17) was working as a Housemaid for Henry King, a Farmer and his family, in Wherwell, Hampshire

(Charles was born in St Mary Bourne, Hampshire. He was baptised on the 28^thNovember 1824, St Mary Bourne, the son of James (a Labourer) and Martha Pyke (nee Curtis) who were married on the 3^rd September 1811, in St Mary Bourne.  (Surname mistakenly recorded as Pink)

In 1861 Charles Pike (34), a Brewer’s Labourer, Mary (26) and their children, Harriet (4), Charles (2) and George (1), were recorded living in Stillman’s Yard, Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

The 1871 census records Charles Pyke (42), a Brewer’s labourer, still living in Stillman’s Yard, with Mary (36) and their children, Charles (12), George (11), Harry (9), William (7), James (6), Hannah (4), (Ann) and Ellen (2).

In 1881 Charles Pike (52), a Brewer’s Labourer, Mary (46), Charles (22), a Bricklayer’s Labourer, Harry (19), a Labourer in Iron Works, James (16) an Errand Boy, Ellen (12), Alfred (10) and Albert (5), were recorded living in Westfields, Newbury.

The 1891 census records Charles Pike (62) as a Brewer’s Drayman, living at 11 Berkeley Road, Newbury, with Mary (56) and their children, Charles (32), William (27), Alfred (20), all Bricklayers and Albert (15), a Printer’s Apprentice.

Mary was widowed in 1900. Charles Pike died aged 75, on the 18^th July, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21^st July.

The 1901 census records Mary (66), living on her own means, at 5, Trafalgar Place, Newbury.

In 1911 Mary (76) was recorded living alone, at 3, Church Almshouses, Newtown Road, Newbury.

Mary died aged 80, on the 14^th March 1915, at 3 Church Almshouses, Newbury. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18^th March, with her husband Charles.

Their son Charles died aged 75, on the 18^th April 1934, he was laid to rest with his parents, on the 21^stApril.
