ELIZA POWERS

AGED ALMSWOMAN'S DEATH

One of the oldest inmates in Kimber's almshouses died on Sunday week. Mrs. Eliza Powers, who had been living at No.12 with her husband Daniel, for fifteen years, was 87 years of age.

She was the daughter of the late Mr. George Callis, a jobmaster of the market-place, two of her brothers being postboys. She married Frank Dore, basket-maker of Northcroft-lane in 1852 and was left a widow in 1860. Three years later she married Daniel Powers, for nearly a half-a-century employed by Messrs. Boyer and Sons, and he still survives although confined to his bed. There was a family of ten children by the two husbands.

The funeral took place on Thursday, the first part of the service at the Parish Church, the interment at Newbury Cemetery, Rev. L.R. Majendie officiating.

The mourners were Messrs F. Dore, T. Powers, Jesse Powers (sons), and Mr. Edward Sargent (son-in-law).

Floral tributes were sent by the Misses Powers (daughters), Mr. and Mrs. E. Sargent, Emily Dore, Mr. and Mrs. J. Powers and family. Mr. and Mrs. Funnell and children.

The coffin, of polished elm, with oak plinths, bore the inscription plate

“Eliza Powers, died November 29th, 1914, aged 87 years”

The undertakers were Messrs. Hart and Sons, Northcroft.
