John Hagley Mason
1864-1929
John, his parents, siblings and early life:
John was baptised on the 26th September 1864 in Bedstone, Shropshire, the son of Thomas and Jane Mason (nee Rollings) who were married on either the 11th or 17th September 1859 in Norton. Radnorshire Wales.
John’s father Thomas was baptised on the 6th August 1807 at Hopton Castle Shropshire, the son of John Hagley and Elizabeth Mason.
His mother Jane was baptised on the 15th May 1831 in Norton, Radnorshire, Wales, the daughter of John (a Labourer) and Anne Rawlings
Thomas and Jane also had the following children:

In 1871 John (6) was recorded living in a Cottage in Bedstone, Shropshire with his father Thomas (62) a Labourer, his mother Jane (40) and his sisters Elizabeth (11), Catharine (10), Alice (8), Jane (4) and Mary (6 months).
The 1881 census records John (16) as a Stable Boy Coachman. He was still living in Bedstone, with his parents Thomas (73) a Parish Clerk (Officer) and Jane (50), his sister Mary (10) and his brother Thomas (6).
John in later life:
John (a Coachman) married Agnes Evans on the 8th October 1889 at St Peter, Evancoyd, Radnorshire, Wales.
(Agness Mary was born on the 26th December 1865 in Shobdon, Herefordshire, she was baptised on the 11th February 1866 in Shobdon, the daughter of William and Sarah Evans (formerly Jones, nee Morris) who were married in 1863 in Herefordshire).
John and Agnes had two sons, Francis Mason Evans born 1889 in Radnorshire and Wilfred John Mason born in 1898 in Shropshire.
The 1891 census records John (27) as a Gardener living in Devynnock, Breconshire, with Agnes (24), a Laundress, their son Francis (1) and Agnes’s widowed father William Evans (70), a Shoemaker.
In 1901 John (36), a Gardener, Agnes (34) and their sons Frank (11) and Wilfred (2), were living at Rectory Stable, Pound Street, Newbury. Berkshire. Rev. Edward J. Gardiner and his wife Emma were living at the Rectory.
The 1911 census records John (46), a Gardener, Agnes (43), Wilfred John (12) and John’s sister Catherine Hagley Mason (49) a Cook, living in Rectory Cottage, Pound Street, Newbury. Rev. L. R. Majendie and his family were living in the Rectory.
By 1929 John and Agnes were living at 1, Kimbers Almshouses, Newbury.
John Hagley Mason died aged 64 on the 16th January 1929, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th January, with Alice Watson***
Agnes was recorded living at 3 Kimber’s Almshouses, Kennet Road Newbury in the 1939 Register.
Agnes Mary died aged 85 on the 24th October 1953, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28th October with her husband John and Alice Watson***
(***Alice Watson was Agnes’s half-sister, born Alice Jones in 1855. She married John Shenton (53) a widower, on the 11th July 1892 Devynnock, Wales. John died 2 years later. Alice remarried on the 24th June 1899 in Wales. Her 2nd husband was widower, Herbert Watson).
Probate: MASON John Hagley of 1 Kimber’s Almshouses, Cheap-street Newbury Berkshire died 16th January 1929 Administration Oxford 1st February to Agnes Mary Mason widow. Effects: £144 9s 1d
