Agnes Mary Mason
1865-1953
Agnes, her parents, half-siblings and early life:
Agness Mary Evans was born on the 26th December 1865 in Shobdon, Herefordshire, she was baptised on the 11th February 1866 in Shobdon, the daughter of William and Sarah Evans (formerly Jones, nee Morris) who were married in 1863 in Herefordshire.
Her father William was a Shoemaker. He was baptised on the 21st October 1821 in Shobdon, Herefordshire, the son of Samuel and Mary Evans.
Her mother Sarah was baptised in 1825 in Shobdon, the daughter of Thomas and Susan Morris. She married Thomas Jones in 1854 (marriage registered in the March quarter in Leominster). Sarah and Thomas had a daughter Alice*** born in 1855, (baptised 19th August 1855 in Shobdon) and a son George, born c1857. In 1861 Sarah was recorded as a widow, working as a Laundress, she was living at Downwood, Shobdon, with her children, George (4) and Alice (5), her brothers James Morris (27), a Carpenter, John Morris (24), a Mason and her niece, Jessie Morris (10).
The 1871 census records Agnes (5), living in West Town, Kingsland, Herefordshire, with her parents William (50), Sarah (45) and her cousin William Morris (6 Months).
In 1881 Agnes (15) was working as a Laundress, she living at Roundabout, Kingsland, Herefordshire with her parents Wiliam (60) and Sarah (48)a Laundress.
Agnes in later life:
Agnes married John Mason (a Coachman) on the 8th October 1889 at St Peter Evancoyd, Radnorshire, Wales.
(John was baptised John Hagley Mason in 1864 in Bedstone, Shropshire, the son of Thomas and Jane Mason)
They had two sons, Francis Mason Evans born 1889 in Radnorshire and Wilfred John born in 1898 in Shropshire.
The 1891 census records John (27) as a Gardener living in Devynnock, Breconshire, with Agnes (24), a Laundress, their son Francis (1) and Agnes’s widowed father William Evans (70), a Shoemaker.
In 1901 John (36), a Gardener, Agnes (34) and their sons Frank (11) and Wilfred (2) were living at Rectory Stable, Pound Street, Newbury. Berkshire. Rev. Edward J. Gardiner and his wife Emma were living at the Rectory.
The 1911 census records John (46), a Gardener, Agnes (43), Wilfred John (12) and John’s sister Catherine Hagley Mason (49) a Cook, living in Rectory Cottage, Pound Street, Newbury. Rev. L. R. Majendie and his family were living in the Rectory.
By 1929 John and Agnes were living at 1, Kimber’s Almshouses, Newbury.
John Hagley Mason died aged 64 on the 16th January 1929, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th January with Alice Watson***
Agnes was recorded living at 3 Kimber’s Almshouses, Kennet Road Newbury in the 1939 Register.
Agnes Mary died aged 85 on the 24th October 1953, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28th October with her husband John and Alice Watson***
***Alice Watson died aged 66 on the 8th January 1923, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13th January.
(***Alice Watson was Agnes’s half-sister, born Alice Jones in 1855. She married John Shenton (53) a widower, on the 11th July 1892 Devynnock, Wales. John died 2 years later. Alice remarried on the 24th June 1899 in Wales. Her 2nd husband was widower, Herbert Watson).
