KING – June 14th, at 31 Russell-road, Newbury, after a long and painful illness, Mary, the beloved wife of George Samuel King and eldest daughter of the late John Pearce, Chaddleworth. – Her end was peace.

Mary Pearce/Pierce Cripps was born in 1854 in Chaddleworth, Berkshire, the illegitimate daughter of Maria Cripps. Maria married John Pearce later that year and Mary was then known as Mary Pearce.

Her father John was baptised in 1833 in Chaddleworth, Berkshire, the son of Thomas and Mary Pierce (nee Arnall) who were married in Chaddleworth in 1825. John died aged 43 in 1876, in Chaddleworth.

Her mother Maria was born c1835 in Chaddleworth, Berkshire, the daughter of Richard and Amy Cripps (nee Hazell) woh were married in Chaddleworth in 1823. Maria died aged 58 in 1894, in Chaddleworth.

John and Maria also had the following children:

In 1861 Mary (6) was living in Chaddleworth with her parents John (28) and Agricultural Labourer and Maria (28) and her siblings Alice (5), Mercy (2) and Thomas (11 months).

The 1871 census records Mary (13), living in Nodmore, Chaddleworth with her parents and siblings.

Mary gave birth to a daughter, Alice Maria in 1875. (Alice was recorded living with Mary’s mother Maria in both the 1881 and 1891 census)

Mary married George Samuel King in 1888 (marriage registered in Newbury).

(George was born in 1865 in Newbury, the son of David and Sarah King (nee Whiting) who were married in 1864 (marriage registered in Newbury))

 

George and Mary had the following four children:

Frederick George born on the 23rd January 1889 in Chaddleworth (birth registered in Dorking Surrey)

William Thomas born c1890, birth registered in Dorking Surrey

Twins: Cecil David and Eveline Maud born on the 31st December 1892 in Newbury

In 1891 George (27) was recorded as a Domestic Coachman, living in Burrows Stables, Shere, Guilford, Surrey with Mary (30) and their two sons, Frederick (2) and William (1).

Their son Cecil died aged 18 months in 1894, his funeral service was held at St John the Evangelist and he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st July.

By 1901 George (36), Mary (42) and their three children Frederick (12), William (11) and Evelyn (8) were living at the Queens Tap, Wharf Road, Newbury, George was the Publican.

George was also recorded at the Queen’s Hotel Tap, Wharf Road, Newbury in the 1907 Kelly’s Directory.

 The 1911 census records George (45) as a Ginger Beer Maker (own Account) living at 7 Speen View Terrace, Newbury with Mary (48) and their children Frederick (22), a Hairdresser’s Assistant, William (21), a Groom (Domestic) and Evelyn (18), a Dressmaker’s Apprentice.

By 1921 George and Mary were living at 31 Russell Road Newbury.

Mary died aged 74 on the 14th June 1928, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th June.

The 1939 Register records George living at 31 Russell Road Newbury. His married daughter Evelyn Martin and her husband George (married in 1921) were recorded living with him.

George died aged 86 on the 12th July 1951, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16th July, alongside his wife Mary and his aunt Elizabeth Joynson (nee Whiting).
