| Transciption: | JOHN GOULD THE LATE MR. JOHN GOULD Another old townsman has passed away in the person of Mr. John Gould, who died on Saturday at the ripe age of 79. The deceased came to Newbury when a young man, as an assistant to Mr. Wright, grocer, of the Market place, and subsequently started in business on his own account in Bartholomew-street, where he continued for many years, but was compelled to retire through and declining health, when he went to reside at “Elmsleigh,” Wash Common. He was a shrewd man of business, and although he took no part in public affairs, he was a prominent member of the Wesleyan body, and in his time filled several official positions. The funeral took place yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon at Newbury Cemetery, the service being conducted by the Rev. F. Halliday, superintendent of the Wesleyan circuit. The mourners were the Misses Gould (daughters), Mr. Wellman (brother-in-law), Mr. Arnee (son-in-law) and the shop assistants. Newbury Weekly News 15 September 1904 |
