1841-1921

Joseph was born in Everton, Bedfordshire, the son of William and Judith Lawson (nee Cocking) who were married in 1826 in Everton cum Tetworth, Huntingdonshire.

His mother Judith was baptised (as Judith Cockain) on the 11th January 1807 in Sandy, Bedfordshire, the daughter of James and Isabella Cockain. Judith died aged 72 in 1876, in Bedfordshire.

His father William was born c1803 in Everton, Bedfordshire, he died aged 65 in 1868, in Bedfordshire.

William and Judith also had the following children:

The 1841 census records William (35), a Labourer and Judith (35) and her siblings, William (14), Mary (12), Jane (10), Thomas (8), Emma (4) and Martha (2) living in Everton, Bedfordshire.

In 1851 Joseph (8) was recorded living in Everton with his parents and siblings William (23), Emma (14), Martha (11) and Thomas (5). His father and brother William were both recorded as Agricultural Labourers and his mother was recorded as a National School Mistress.

The 1861 census records his parents living in Everton, William was recorded as a Market Gardener and Judith was recorded as a School Mistress. Joseph (18) was recorded as a Railway Poter, lodging in Bengeo, Hertfordshire.

By 1867 Joseph had joined the Police Force, he was recorded as a Police Constable in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census records. The 1901 and 1911 census records record him as a Retired Police Constable.

The 1871 census records Joseph (28), Sarah (28) and their sons Joseph (3) and Arthur (7 months) living in Chieveley, Berkshire. By 1881 the family were living in Brightwell Street, Brightwell Berkshire. The 1891 census records them living in Village Road, West Shefford, Berkshire.

By 1901 the were living at 7 Netherton Terrace, Boundary Road Newbury. They continued to live in Netherton Terrace until their deaths.

Sarah Ann died aged 76 on the 23rd March 1918, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th March with her sister-in-law Mary Ann Lawson (buried 1910)

Joseph died aged 80 on the 12th September 1921, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16th September with his wife Sarah Ann (buried 1918) and his sister Mary Ann Lawson (buried 1910)

 

Probate: Lawson Joseph of 7 Netherton-terrace Newbury Berkshire retired police constable died 12th September 1921 at Union Infirmary Newbury Probate Oxford 24th October to Clara Ethel Gilbert widow. Effects: £123 0s 1d
