THOMAS WARD

THE LATE MR. THOMAS WARD – A memorial stone has been placed over the grave of the late Mr. Thomas Ward, in Newbury Cemetery, bearing the following inscription:-

In affectionate remembrance of

THOMAS WARD

Who died November 29^th, 1882,

In the 64^th year of his age.

“The spirit shall return to the God who gave it,”

“A light is from our household gone,

A voice we love is stilled;

A place is vacant in our home,

Which never can be filled.”

This stone was erected to the memory of

Thomas Ward, by his fellow officers, by

Whom he was held in great esteem, having

Filled the post of Master in the

Newbury Union Workhouse

For a period of

16 ½ years.

He was buried on 2 December 1882 aged 63.

Also Mary Ann – widow who died on 4 April 1920 aged 83.

The late Mr Ward

By the death of Thomas Ward of vacancy is created in the mastership of the Newbury union. Mr ward has filled this office for a period of 16 years having been elected in June 1866 in succession to Mr Kite.

Previous to this Mr Ward held the post of relieving officer for the Newbury division. He was also registrar of marriages and office he held up to the time of his death and as recently as the Saturday previous to his decease he attended to register marriage. His health had been failing for the past years and though it was felt there was only one result the termination of life was scarcely expected to be so near.

Mr ward sustained his various offices with efficiency and in his capacity as master of the workhouse exercise discipline with an ability which commanded the respect of the guardians and district poor law inspector.

Mrs ward who held the office of matron also proved a valued assistant and from the time of the husbands failing health devoted herself with additional energy to the duties of the establishment so there should be no lack of service.

The deceased was 63 years of age at the time of his death
