Emily Adey   c1836-1878

 Emily was baptised on the 13^th March 1836 at St Mary the Virgin, Marlborough, Wiltshire the daughter of Henry and Sarah Seymour (nee Brunsdon) who were married on the 19^th April 1830 at St Andrew, Holborn, Middlesex. (Henry was Sarah’s 2^nd husband,  her 1^st husband was George Batten, they were on the 18^th October 1819 at St Marylebone Middlesex).

Emily’s father Henry was born on the 10^th July 1796 in Speenhamland, Berkshire he was baptised on the 30^th March 1798 the son of Henry and Sarah Seymour (nee Bettridge) who were married at St Mary, Speen, Berkshire on the 9^th September 1788.  He was a Tallow Chandler and during his life, served as a Justice of the Peace, an Alderman, and a Churchwarden. He was also the Mayor of Marlborough in 1855. He died aged 85 on the 27^th April 1882 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3^rd May.

Her mother Sarah and her twin sister Mary were born on the 23^rd September1795 in Newbury Berkshire they were baptised on the 21^st October 1795 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the daughters of Richard and Catharine Brunsdon (nee Brown) who were married on the 14^th September 1789 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Sarah died aged 74 on the 26^th July 1870 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1^st August.

Henry and Sarah also had the following children baptised at St Mary the Virgin Marlborough:

Catherine Brunsdon baptised 28^th December 1831

Charles baptised 5^th February 1833 (died April 1833) 

 Mary baptised 3^rd December 1834 (died aged 6 in 1840).

 (Emily’s father Henry also had an illegitimate son, Henry Seymour Barley baptised on the 14^th May 1820 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, mother recorded as Mary Barley, father recorded as a Tallow Chandler )

Emily was recorded living in Marlborough with her parents Henry (44) and Sarah (44) and her sister Catherine (9).

The 1851 census records Emily (15) as a scholar at a school in Long Street, Devizes, Wiltshire.

She married William George Adey on the 21^st September 1858 at the parish church of St Peter and St Paul, Marlborough.  Her husband William George was born c1829 in Newbury the son of George and Martha Adey (nee Low) who were married on the 13^th November 1826 in Speen Berkshire. William George was a Builder. Like his father-in-law he was also an Alderman, Justice of the Peace and Churchwarden and served as Mayor of Newbury in 1874 and 1875.

 William George and Emily had the following children:

 George Seymour 1860 (died 3^rd February 1861, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8^th February)

 Margaret Lucy c1871

 William George 1873

 Raymond Falkland Winchcomb 1875

 Henry Low c1878

 The family were recorded living in West Mills Newbury in 1861 and 1871.

  Emily died aged 42 in 1878 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10^th June

 William George was again recorded living in West Mills in both the 1881 census and the 1891 census.

 He remarried in 1881 his 2^nd wife was Anna Carnell (nee Day), a widow, they were married on the 7^th July at St John, Glastonbury, Somerset.

William George died aged 67 on the 26^th March 1897 in Highclere (death recorded in Kingsclere) he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 31^st March

 His widow Anna died aged 75 on the 23^rd October 1915 at the time of her death she was living at “Avalon” Greenham Newbury Berkshire.

 Strangely neither William George ADEY nor his first wife Emily appear in Mrs. Patterson’s listing of grave stone inscriptions. But the interment of William George ADEY took place (source NWN) "in the family grave, within a few yards of the Cemetery Chapel, where the deceased's first wife was buried".  Emily was buried on 10 June 1878 as recorded in the cemetery’s account book.

Devizes and Wiltshire Gazette thurs 23 Sept 1863  gives Marriage  “On Thursday, at St. Peter’s Church, Marlborough, by the Rev. Prebendary Tufnell, Mr Wm. George ADEY, of Newbury to Miss Emily, youngest daughter of Mr. H Seymour, of Marlborough, tallow-chandler

William George ADEY’s second wife was Anna Carnell "the widow of the late Mr. William Henry Carnell, of Glastonbury".   They were married at St John’s Church Glastonbury 7 July 1881.  Anna does not appear to be buried in NRC and died q4 1915 age 75 (death reg. in Newbury)
