SAMUEL FLINT

THE LATE MR. SAMUEL FLINT

The Mayor said that this was the first public meeting since the death of Mr. Samuel Flint, who for many years a member of their body. He would suggest that they should pay a respect to the memory of their deceased colleague by entering upon the minutes a deep sense of their regret and loss of his services; and that in addition a letter of condolence should be sent to his widow expressing their sympathy with her and her family in their severe bereavement.

Ald. Hickman seconded the proposition. The removal of Mr. Samuel Flint was not merely a loss to his family but to the town. He had known Mr. Flint for 40 years, had seen him grow up from youth to manhood, and occupy as Mayor the highest position it was in the hands of his townsmen to give It was saddening to think that within nine months two active members of the Corporation had been removed by death.

The resolution was put and carried.

THE LATE MR SAMUEL FLINT

Our readers will have unhappily been prepared to receive the sad intelligence of the decease of this gentleman, which occurred at his residence, Cheap-street, Newbury, yesterday morning. The disease to which Mr. Flint succumbed was of a most painful nature, and for some weeks his condition has been regarded as hopeless. Within the last day or two however a marked improvement has taken place, but a violent fit of coughing, caused by the rupture of a blood vessel, had been the proximate cause of death. His removal at the comparatively early age of fifty cannot be but keenly felt by his sorrowing relatives and friends with whom we are assured that our readers will sincerely sympathise, on account of the genial nature, the liberal disposition, and the courteous and upright character, which have caused Mr Flint to be deservedly esteemed amongst his fellow townsmen. He has been for about twelve years as member of the Town Council, and held the office of Mayor during the year 1871-72.
