David Dines Wheeler
David Dines Wheeler
The eldest son of Charles and Maria Wheeler, he was born in 1837 (4Q).
He married Emma Anne Pung in 1859 (1Q) in Newbury and they lived a few doors up from his father in The Broadway. David was working as an Engraver and Machinist.
They had five children:
Robert Roy born in 1860 (4Q) but died a few weeks later in 1861 (1Q); Margaret Elizabeth born in 1862; Charles William born on 7 November 1864 (taken from 1939 census); Katherine Emily born in 1866 and Emma Annie born in 1868 (3Q).
Tragically, Margaret Elizabeth, aged 8 years, died on 10 November 1870 , and four days later her sister Katherine Emily, aged 4 years, died on 14 November, from scarlet fever.
The business had moved to 45 Northbrook Street and from the 1871 census David Dines continued to trade as an Ironmonger and Machinist. Emma Anne was working as a Dressmaker.
He died on 1 April 1872, aged 34 years, and he was buried on 6 April in an unconsecrated brick grave. His sister Elizabeth Rolfe was later buried in the same family vault on 21 July 1886.
His widow Emma Anne moved to Fulham & Hammersmith with Charles William and Emma Annie. She continued to be a Dressmaker: she had another child named Edward Henry Wheeler born in 1877 (2Q) in Exmouth, Devon. Charles William joined the GPO and eventually became Asst. Superintendent Telegraphist/Postal at Mount Pleasant. Emma Annie became a vocalist.
