The articles below contain information about Elizabeth Rolfe.
Elizabeth Rolfe
Her parents Charles Wheeler and Maria Dines married on 2 April 1832 at St. Mary Church, Speen, and Elizabeth was born a year later on 20 April 1833. She was baptised on 26 May 1833 at the Newbury Lower Independent Meeting House. Her sister Charlotte was born 17/3/1835 followed by her 2 brothers, David Dines born in 1838 and Charles born in 1840.
Her father settled in Newbury from Swindon where he was born and he ran a successful Ironmongery business employing 8 men at The Broadway, Speenhamland.
On 26 March 1858, at the Lower Meeting Independent Chapel, she married Stephen Rolfe, an Ironmonger. Their only child, Hannah Maria, was born in 1859 but sadly died a year later.
For the next few years her husband worked hard in various trades in the Market Place. For more background details, see the record of Stephen Rolfe. Circumstances seem to have changed and in the 1871 census they are living with Stephen’s mother, Hannah, at 7 Kimbers Almshouses.
By 1881 she had returned to live with her parents Charles and Maria Wheeler in London Road, Speen. Her father now aged 76 years has retired from the ironmongery business.
She died on 18 July 1886 aged 53 years and from Speen she was buried on 21 July. Her brother David Dines Wheeler who died on 1 April 1872 aged 34 years, is buried in the same unconsecrated family vault.
