Charles was born on the 28th June 1853 in Rotherfield, Sussex, the son of William (a Labourer) and Harriet Hyder (nee Card) who were married on the 9th August 1851 at St Denys Rotherfield.

His father William was born on the 8th August 1829, he was baptised on the 13th September 1829 at St Denys, Rotherfield, Sussex, the son of James and Ann Hider. William died of the 16th December 1903 in Rotherfield.

His mother Harriet was born on the 10th April 1828, she was baptised on the 22nd June 1828 in Rotherfield, the daughter of William (a Labourer) and Sarah Card. Harriet died aged 35 in 1863 in Rotherfield.

In 1861 Charles (7) was living at Stitches, Rotherfield, Sussex with his father William (31) (now a Gardener), his mother Harriet (34) and his siblings Jane (9), James (5) and Charlotte (1). (Family name recorded as Hider)

The 1861 census records Charles (17) as a Farm Servant, living at Blackthorn Hill, Rotherfield.

The 1881 census records Charles (27) working as a Gardener, living in Maplesdeus, Rotherfield with his father William (51), his stepmother Hannah (39) and his brother William (19), a Stableman. (William married Hannah Meredith on the 10th July 1867 at Holy Trinity, Eridge Green, Sussex)

Charles married Sarah Ann Kingstone in 1885 (marriage registered in Tunbridge). (Sarah was born1859 in Wooton Rivers, Wiltshire, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Kingston (nee Paice) who were married on the 1st January 1859 in Wootton Rivers, Wiltshire.

Charles and Sarah had the following children:

Arthur James born 1887 birth registered in Pewsey

Charles William born 1889 birth registered in Pewsey

Elizabeth Charlotte Mabel born 1890 birth registered in Uckfield

Helen May born c1896 birth registered in Ticehurst

Amy Sarah Kingston born 1901 birth registered in Tunbridge

The 1891 census records Charles (36), Sarah (31), Arthur (3), Charles (2) and Elizabeth (4 months) living Maplesdeus, Rotherfield. Charles was recorded as a Gardener Domestic Servant.

The 1901 census records Charles (45) as a Corn Store Labourer, living at 6 Clifton Terrace, Tunbridge Wells, Kent with Sarah (41) and their children Arthur (13), Charles (11), Mabel (9) (Elizabeth Charlotte Mabel), Alice (7) (Mary Harriet Alice) and Helen (5)

The 1911 census records Charles (56) as a Domestic Gardener, living at 19 Dukes Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, with Sarah (50) and their children Charles (22), Alice (18), (Mary Harriet Alice) Helen (15) and Amy (9).

The Electoral Registers 1921-1934 record Charles living in Pound Street, Newbury. By 1933 he was recorded living at “Mardens” The Folly, Stroud Green, Newbury.

The 1939 Register records Charles as a Retired Gardener living at “Mardens” The Folly, Stroud Green, Newbury with his wife Sarah, his daughter-in-law Margaret Hyder (wife of their son Charles William) and their grandson Leslie Hyder (son of their son Arthur James).

Charles died aged 87 on the 26th September 1940, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th September.

His wife Sarah Ann died aged 83 on the 7th December 1941, she was laid to rest with Charles on the 11th December.
