Sarah was born in Newbury the illegitimate daughter of Martha Appleton. She was baptised on the 23rd June 1843 in the parish church of St Nicolas Newbury. (Sarah’s mother Martha was born c1822 in Newbury the daughter of William and Elizabeth Appleton (nee Lambdin/Lambden) she married John Bowles in 1863 in Newbury and died aged 73 on the 29th January 1893)

In 1851 Sarah (8) was living in Bartholomew’s City Newbury with her mother Martha (32), her grandparents Elizabeth (53) and William Appleton (60), a Sawyer, her aunt, Elizabeth Appleton (13), her uncles, Charles (25) and William (34), both Sawyers and  her cousins, Matilda (7) and Elizabeth Appleton (5) (the daughters of her widowed uncle William)

Sarah gave birth to a daughter, Mary Ann in 1861. The 1861 census records Sarah (17), her daughter Mary Ann (2 months) and her cousin Elizabeth Appleton (15) living with her grandparents William and Elizabeth Appleton (both aged 72) in the City Newbury.

Sarah gave birth to another daughter, Alice in 1866.

The 1871 census records Sarah (28) as a Charwoman living with her daughters Mary Ann (10) and Alice (4) in the City, Newbury

She married George Bryant in Newbury in 1880. The 1881 census records George (36) and Sarah (37) living in the City, Newbury. George was recorded as a Labourer.

Sarah gave birth to a daughter, Martha Ellen in 1882. Sadly Martha died aged 3 on the 10th November 1885 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16th November (with her cousin William Daniel Appleton)

Sarah was widowed in 1890 George died aged 45 on the 8th October he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11th October

In 1891 Sarah (47) was working as a Charwoman, living alone in Hampton Road Newbury.

The 1901 census records Sarah as a Servant (Washerwoman) in the household of widower Charles Edmonds (69) in Wash Common Newbury. In 1911 she was working as a Cook at Warren Lodge Newbury, the home of Miss Mary Smith-Masters (65)

By 1921 Sarah was living at 8 Bartholomew Almshouses Newbury she died aged 77 on the 5th January 1921 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th January with her husband and her mother.
