Martha Bowles
c1819-1893
Martha and her twin sister Mary were born in Newbury they were baptised on the 29th December 1819 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the daughters of William and Elizabeth Appleton (nee Lambdin/Lambden) who married on the 19th September 1814 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Martha’s twin sister died aged 2+ in 1822 she was buried on the 26th August at St Nicolas Newbury.
Martha’s father was born c1790 in either Newbury Berkshire or Woodhay Hampshire and was a Sawyer. Her mother was born c1787 in Newbury.
Other known children of William and Elizabeth were: Thomas c1815, William c1817, Charles c1823 and Elizabeth c1838
The 1815 census of Newbury records Martha’s parents William (25) and Elizabeth (27) and her brother Thomas (an infant), living in Be Yard (east side of Bartholomew Street) Newbury with a Thomas Appleton (70) (possibly Martha’s grandfather), William Lambdin (31), a Tailor, Thomas Lambdin (26) and Sarah Arrowsmith (50).
In 1841 Martha (20) was living with her parents and her siblings, William, Charles, and Elizabeth in the City Newbury.
Martha gave birth to a daughter c1843 she was baptised as Sarah on the 23rd June 1843 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (Sarah married George Bryant in 1880 and died in 1921)
The 1851 census records Martha (32) and Sarah (8) living with Martha’s parents William (63) and Elizabeth (63) and siblings William (34), Charles (25) and Elizabeth (13) and William’s two daughters Matilda (7) and Elizabeth (5) in Bartholomew Street Newbury.
In 1861 Martha was visiting a William and Mary Gentry in Ponsonby Terrace, Middlesex, her daughter Sarah (17) was recorded living with her Appleton grandparents in the City Newbury.
Martha married John Bowles in Newbury in 1863. (John was a widower with three children, Jane born 1849, Charlotte born 1851 and Henry born 1852)

Bride and Groom made their mark
The 1871 census records John (53) as a General Labourer and Martha (51) as a Charwoman living in St John’s View, Newbury. They continued to live in St John’s View until their deaths.
Martha died aged 73 on the 29th January 1893 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd February, also in the same grave are her daughter and son-in-law Sarah and George Bryant.
Her husband John died on the 25th December 1899 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th December.
