Recorder's Notes	James was born at Weston Farm, Welford, Berks, 650 or so acres employing 35 labourers. He lived on the farm as a farmer until his marriage in 1874 to Henrietta, daughter of the Vicar of Speenhamland, Rev Meakin, in 1874 when he was 41. He later became a teacher and Licesnsed Lay Reader at St John's church. The family was brought up first at Castle Houses, Speen then at 2, then 3, Belvedere Drive, Newtown Rd, Newbury. In the 1911 census he was described as suffering from nerves & head not strong & supplemented his income with boarders, including his spinster sister, Annie (Anne) Elizabeth, who also lived on the farm until she moved in with James' family at Speen and Belvedere. He left £2000+ to Arthur Gray Palmer, son, photographer. Henrietta is the daughter of Rev John Alexander Deverell Meakin, vicar of St Mary's, Speen,Berkshire and Elizabeth Withers of Baydon, Wilts who died when her children were very young. Henrietta's first stepmother died while she was still young and her father married again in 1847. She did not work outside the home. She is recorded in 1911 as having had melancholia for 7 years. Two of her sisters, also bereaved as young children, died in Asylum, one in the Warneford, Oxford, the other in Carlisle. In the 1911 census Annie Elizabeth was recorded as suffering paralysis and Arthur Gray had suffered infantile paralysis. The family always were supported by servants.S ource: Ancestry records.

Transciption:	HENRIETTA LOUISA MAJENDIE PALMER The late Mrs James Palmer The death occurred on Sunday morning, August 29^th,of the widow of the late Mr James Palmer, of 3 Belvedere Drive, Newtown Road, for many years ab invalid. No doubt many of the older inhabitants of Newbury will remember that the deceased was a daughter of the Rev. J A D Meakin, M.A., (of St John’s College, Cambridge), who for 39 years was curate of St Mary’s Speen ,and late vicar of St Mary’s, Speenhamland. The funeral took place on Friday, the service being held in St John’s Church. The coffin was of polished oak with brass fittings and inscribed “Henrietta Louisa Majendie Palmer, aged 82 years” and was placed ibn the vault with her husband and sister-in-law, in Newbury Cemetery. The Rev. A G P Baines officiated. The mourners were Mr and Mrs John Palmer (son and daughter-in-law), Mr and Mrs E Chapman (daughter and son-in-law), Mr A G Palmer (son), Miss M and Miss P Palmer (cousins, of Reading), and Miss M and Miss D Wells of Belvedere Drive), Mr and Mrs Harry D Wells of Cranleigh, were unable to be present. A beautiful large cross was sent by all the children, other floral tributes were sent by Mrs C Hooper, “Shamrock” Chesterfield Road (sister-in-law and cousin),Mrs James Waldron, of the Lawn, Speen, Mrs W Keep and the Misses Keep “Southwood”, Newtown Road, Mr and Mrs E Wells and the Misses Wells, 2 Belvedere, Marion Chapman, King and Audrey Palmer, Gladys and Teddy Wells (grandchildren), and Mr A B Bland “Woodcote”, Newbury

"James Palmer was born in East Garston into a wealthy farming family and became a school master in Shaw.

"He married his first cousin Henrietta Louisa Majendie Meakin. She was born in Speen and her father Henry Meakin was the vicar there. He is buried in front if the church.

"When she was young she visited family in Australia and is related to William Wordsworth.

The reverend John Alexander Meakin, vicar at Speen, was Henreitta Louisa Majendie Palmer's father. He married three times.

One if his wives was Julia Rachel Myers. Julia died from T B.

Her father was John Myers, William Wordsworth's cousin.

James Palmer and Henrietta Meakin were cousins.
