He later became a teacher and Licesnsed Lay Reader at St John's church. The family was brought up first at Castle Houses, Speen then at 2, then 3, Belvedere Drive, Newtown Rd, Newbury. In the 1911 census he was described as suffering from nerves & head not strong & supplemented his income with boarders, including his spinster sister, Annie (Anne) Elizabeth, who also lived on the farm until she moved in with James' family at Speen and Belvedere. He left £2000+ to Arthur Gray Palmer, son, photographer. Henrietta's first stepmother died while she was still young and her father married again in 1847. She did not work outside the home. She is recorded in 1911 as having had melancholia for 7 years. Two of her sisters, also bereaved as young children, died in Asylum, one in the Warneford, Oxford, the other in Carlisle. In the 1911 census Annie Elizabeth was recorded as suffering paralysis and Arthur Gray had suffered infantile paralysis. The family always were supported by servants.S ource: Ancestry records.
