James Crossley Legg

He was born c.1825 in Newbury.  His occupation was Shoemaker. He married his first wife Jane Parrott in 1847. She died in 1874 and he later married Charlotte Brindley (nee Aldridge) in 1876.  The 1851 Census shows he is living at Middleton Court with his wife Jane and two sons John (b.1849) and Edwin (b.1850), and his parents-in-law Thomas (Cordwainer) and Tabitha Parrott. In 1861 they are still living at Middleton Court with their sons and a daughter Alice (b.1854).  In 1871 he is living at 100 Northbrook Street with Jane and his son Edwin. By 1881 he moves to 111 Bartholomew Street with his wife Charlotte;  in 1891 – they are  residing at Briar Wood, Newbury; in 1901 at 10 Raymonds’ Almshouses and in 1911 both are boarding at Rangemore, Donnington Square, in the Burton household (Head: Samuel Perry Burton, Leather Seller).   

Probate states ”James Legg of 16 (sic) Raymonds’ Almshouses Newbury, shoemaker, died 20 April 1917.  Probate to Alice Jane Winchester (wife of Edward Winchester)”.  Effects £169 4s 1d

He is buried with his wife Charlotte Legg.
