THOMAS HENRY CULLUM
DEATH OF MR. TOM CULLUM MEMBER OF AN OLD NEWBURY FAMILY

Congregational Church Deacon

A member of an old Newbury family has passed away in the person of Mr. Thomas Henry Cullum, of Northcroft Lane, who died on Sunday morning after a long illness. Mr. Cullum, who would have been 74 years of age next month, was the son of the late Mr. Henry Cullum, who was a well known townsman and captain of the old Newbury Fire Brigade for some years. Educated at the old Wesleyan School, Mr. Cullum was apprenticed to the building firm of Messrs. Adey, later being employed at Messrs. Elliotts' joinery works. On the death of his father, in 1904, he took over the old established builder's business in Northcroft Lane and carried on this until the time of his death.

Mr. Cullum had been associated with the Newbury Congregational Church all his life. His chief interest was in the Sunday School, which he attended as a scholar, then as a teacher and superintendent for some 50 years and a deacon of the church for 25 years. Among his other offices was that of Secretary of the Church Benevolent Fund, which he held up to within the last six months. In this connection he used to visit the sick and needy of the congregation, and he did much good work in a quiet manner.
Mr. Cullum's death will be deeply mourned by members of the Newbury Unemployed Men's Club in Northcroft Lane. He was a member of the committee and took a very keen interest in the club since its inception some years ago. This was shown by the fact that he devoted two evenings a week to attending its meetings and joining in the games with the members. Mr. Cullum was also a trustee of the Newbury Temperance Hall. Mr. Cullum knew Newbury and its people as few men did. He had a wonderful memory and used to delight in telling anecdotes of his early life. He died in the house in which he was born. He leaves a wife, and a son and daughter by his first wife.

The funeral takes place today (Thursday) at 2.30pm. at the Congregational Church, the interment being at the Newtown-road Cemetery. Newbury Weekly News 6 October 1938 Mrs P. p 14 w47 Died 2 October 1938 aged 73 Buried 6 October 1938 from 6 Northcroft Lane Bk 1917 p. 214 no. 11306
