Mary, her parents, siblings and early life:

Mary was born in Little Hemsworth, Yorkshire. She was baptised on the 6th March 1836, at St Helen, Hemsworth, the daughter of Charles and Martha Walker (nee Bingley) who were married on the 27th November 1832, at St Helen, Hemsworth.

Mary’s father Charles was born c1808, in Nun Monkton, Yorkshire. He died aged 83 in 1892, in Little Hemsworth.

Her mother Martha was born c1809 in Hemsworth, Yorkshire

Charles and Martha also had the following children baptised at St Helen, Hemsworth:

William, 22nd September 1833

Charles, 25th October 1840

Susanna, 15th September 1844

George, 5th March 1848

Joseph, 24th November 1850

Sarah, 27th August 1854

The 1841 census records Charles (30), an Agricultural Labourer, Martha (30), William (7), Mary (5) and Charles (8 months), living in Little Hemsworth, Yorkshire.

In 1851 Mary (14) was working a House Servant in Hemsworth for a Farmer, John Green (25) and his family. (Ancestry have mistakenly recorded her aged 74).

Mary gave birth to a daughter, Emma in 1857, in Hemsworth, Emma was baptised on the 11th October 1857 in Hemsworth, the illegitimate daughter of Mary Walker, a spinster of Little Hemsworth.

The 1861 census records Mary (24) working as a House Servant for a Lucy and Benjamin Beddow, an Independent Minister, at 9 Regent Street, Barnsley, Yorkshire. (Ancestry have mistakenly recorded her surname as Wacker) Her daughter Emma (3) was recorded living with her grandparents Charles (55) and Martha (50), her uncles, George (13), Joseph (10) and her aunt, Sarah (6).

Mary in later life:

Mary married 1864.

Groom: William Adams, aged 22, bachelor, occupation, Machinist, abode, St John’s Newbury

Bride: Mary Walker, aged 26, spinster, abode, St John’s Newbury

Fathers: Charles Walker, a Farmer and Thomas Adams, a Machinist

 

(William was born c1842, in Donnington, Berkshire, the son of Thomas and Mary Ann Adams (nee Preston) who were married in 1841 (marriage registered in Newbury)

William and Mary had the following children:

William Charles Henwood, 1864 in Newbury

Fanny, 1866, in Greenham

Mary Ann, 1868 in Greenham

Thomas, 1870 in Greenham

Henry, 1872 in Greenham

Alice, 1874 in Greenham

Florence, 1878 in Greenham

The 1871, 1881 and 1891 census records all record the family living at the “Axe and Compass” Inn, Newbury Berkshire. Households recorded as follows:

1871: William (29), a Machinist, Mary (32), Emma (12) (now known as Emma Adams), William (6), Fanny (4), Mary Ann (2) and Thomas (9 months).

1881: William (39), an Engine Fitter, Mary (43), Willian (16), a Railway Porter, Fanny (14), a Domestic Servant, Mary Ann (12), Thomas (10), Henry (8), Alice (6) and Florence (2).

1891: William (49), a Wheelwright, Mary (51), Fanny (24), Alice (16) and Florence (12)

Mary died aged 59, at home (Axe and Compass Inn) on the 14th October 1897. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th October.

The 1901 census records William (59) as an Innkeeper at the “Axe and Compass” Inn, his daughter Fanny (34), Mary (32) and Florence (22) were still living with him and were helping him at the Inn.

William died 60, at the “Axe and Compass,” on the 13th February 1902. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with Mary, on the 18th February.
