Arabella Wilson was the daughter of Edward Wilson who carried on the business of a butcher in Northbrook St. She died aged 89 at 1 Catherine road Newbury

Arabella Wilson

1844-1934

Arabella was born on the 8^th August 1844 in Newbury, Berkshire, the eldest child of Edward and Frances Wilson (nee Kermon) who were married on the 16^th February 1843 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

Walter Berkley born in 1850

Brice born in 1853

Arabella’s father was an Alderman, a Justice of the Peace, a Farmer and a Butcher.

 The family lived at 85 Northbrook Street, Newbury (now Vodafone Newbury (2023) and where Edward traded as a Butcher).

In 1851 Arabella was living with her father Edward (43), her mother Frances (26), her sister Florence (3), her brother Walter (9 months) and her grandmother Frances Kermon (55)

The 1861 census records her aged 16, living with her parents, her siblings Florence (13), Brice (8), her grandmother Frances Kermon (65) an apprentice butcher and a butcher’s assistant.

In 1871 Arabella was living with her parents, siblings and grandmother.

In 1881 Arabella (33) and her sister Florence (31) were recorded as her father’s accountants, her brother Walter (30) was recorded as a Butcher and her brother Brice was recorded as a Farrier. Her father was recorded employing 6 men and 2 boys.

Arabella’s brother died suddenly aged 32 on the 29^th July 1882, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2^nd August.

Her mother died aged 59 on the 26^th February 1884, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3^rd March.

Her father Edward died 83 on the 2^nd April 1891, he was laid to rest with his wife Frances on the 7^th April.

The 1891 census records Arabella (46) as a Butcher. Her sister Florence was recorded living on her own means. They were still living in Northbrook Street. (They were executors of their father’s will so although Arabella was recorded as a butcher, she was probably in the process of keeping the business going until things were sorted out)

In 1901 Arabella and Florence were living on their own means at 1 Cheap Street, Newbury.

By 1911 they were living at “Kermon” Andover Road Newbury. (House named after the Kermon family name)

Arabella’s sister Florence died aged 69 on the 26^th February 1917, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with her parents, on the 3^rd March

Arabella died aged 89 on the 23^rd March 1934, she was laid to rest with her parents and sister Florence, on the 27^th March.
