THOMAS HIBEL GARLICK
Death of Mr Thomas Garlick, A Self-made Business Man
Mr Thomas Hibel Garlick passed away at his residence Ormonde House, Newbury, on Monday at the age of 84 years. For some weeks recently he had been in a nursing home in Reading suffering from a carbuncle, from which he apparently recovered and returned home. Last week-end he caught cold and collapsed on Sunday from pneumonia from which he died.
Tom Garlick, as he had been known to the older generation, was a Newbury boy and was for many years one of the best known business men in town. He was a jovial personality. He was apprenticed to the trade of watch and clock maker with the late Mr Alfred Stradling. That was in the sixties. Then he purchased the business of Mr E. Saunders, which was situated at 72 North-brook Street and is now the establishment of Mr E. Bennett, tailor. After a short stay here, he moved to 46, North-brook Street. Mr Garlick was in business in the town from 1875 to 1919 when he retired and the premises at 46 Northbrook Street, have since been carried on by Mr W.H. Bentley under the same name - Garlick and Co. Jewellers.
Mr Garlick was quite a self-made man. He had nothing behind him when he started out in life, but he finished up his career one of the most prosperous business men in the town. He bought Ormonde House on his retirement from the executors of the late John Porter. He was a keen gardener and since giving up his business has practically lived in his garden. A prominent member of the Wesleyan Church, Northbrook Street, he held various offices and stood first on the “plan" as a local preacher, which indicated the length of time he had been associated with Wesleyan Church life.
Otherwise, Mr Garlick never took a prominent part in public life.
The funeral service takes place on Friday at2.30 at the Methodist Church, North-
brook Street and the interment at 3.15 at the Old Cemetery. |
