DEATH OF MR. RUPERT ADEY A LOYAL CHURCH WORKER The death took place on Thursday last at his residence in Craven-road of Mr. John Rupert Adey. He was the last of his generation of the Adey family, so well-known for many years in Newbury. Mr. Adey was associated with his brother, Jospeh Adey, in the coal and hay business in West Mills. Mr. Rupert Adey, who was 77 years of age, was a great Church worker. For 28 years he was a lay preacher, and for nearly as long was sidesman at the Parish Church. He did a great deal of preaching in Newbury and the neighbouring villages, and for a long time he took the morning service at the Newbury Poor Law Institution. In by-gone days he did a lot of work in connection with the Temperance Society and the Church of England Men's Society. He was secretary for the Mission Church in the Wharf-road for some years, and also interested himself in St. Hilda's Mission Room in Salcombe-road. Within the past six months, his three sisters have passed away.
The funeral took place on Saturday morning, the service at the Parish Church, which was choral, being conducted by the Rector, Rev. W.L. Cooper, while the Rev. Lionel Majendie, formerly Rector of Newbury, took the committal service at the Old Cemetery.
The family mourners were: Mr. Percy Adey (son), Mr. and Mrs. Lea Sugden (son-in-law and daughter), Mr. Leslie Adey (nephew), Mr. Edward Martin (nephew), Mr. and Mrs. Harry Martin (nephew and niece) Mr. Tom. Thatcher, Mrs. Clare Cosburn. |
