Funeral at Newtown Road Cemetery
The funeral of |Mr. A.J. Rawlins, of Craven-road, Newbury, who acted as relieving officer for 34 years and held other important posts, took place at the Newtown-road Cemetery on Thursday, the body having been laid to rest in the chapel overnight.
The respect in which Mr. Rawlins was held was evidenced by the large attendance. The service was conducted by the Rector, the Rev. W.L. Cooper, M.A. There were no wreaths at the deceased's own special request.
The mourners were Mrs. A. Rawlins (widow), Mr. K. Rawlins (son), Mrs W. Hotten and Miss D. Rawlings (daughters), Mr. C. Rawlins (brother), Mr. E.T. Batt and Mr. G. Hotten (brothers-in-law), Mr. W. Hotten (son-in-law), and Dr. R. Hickman.
Among the others present were Mr. G.E. Slater, Rev. W. Kingsley Kefford, Mr. W. Pettifer, Mr. E.H. Orchard (relieving officer), Nurse Hawtin, Nurse A.B. Hawtin, Nurse G.H. Vaughan, Mr. T.S. Waite, Mr. F. Goddard, Mr. F. Stanton, Mr. J. Pyke, Mrs. Cecil Pyke, Mrs. Hallett, Mr. T. W. Chivers, Mr. and Mrs. Heath, Mr. F.G. Pavier, Mr. D.J. Brittain, Mr.H. Bannister, Mr. L. Bannister, ex-Inspector and Mrs. Gallop, Mr. W. Gallop, Mr. J. May, Mr. W. Mackerell. Misses Robinson, Mrs.F. Morton, Mrs.W.G. Stillman, Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Wickens, Mr. Eaton.
Mr.S.V. Pinniger, clerk for many years to Newbury Board of Guardians, was at an inquest and was unable to be present at the funeral. Mr. E.J. Forster, the chairman of the Newbury Instituition House Committee, had also an unavoidable engagement which prevented his attendance.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. T. Plumb, Greenham-road, Newbury.
