DEATH OF MISS MARGARET BURROUGH IN HER 95TH YEAR By the death of Miss Margaret Burrough in her 95th year, the last member of a family resident in Newbury for over three-quarters of a century has gone. She lived with a brother and two sisters- who pre-deceased her- in Donnington-square for very many years. Her brother was Mr. John Burrough, who was one of the original members of the old Newbury Cycling Club. Her sisters were Miss Mary Burrough and Miss Bessie Burrough. The latter married Mr. Tom Shaw, a director of the firm of Messrs. de la Rue and co., the famous makers of playing cards, who afterwards built the house on Newtown Common known as Horris Bank.
Before they went to Donnington-square, the Misses Burrough carried on a girls' school for tradesmen's daughters in Northbrook-street, which now forms the premises of Messrs. Stradling Ltd.
Miss Burrough was almost the oldest member of the Newbury Congregational Church, having joined the Church as far back as 1868. She was a charming old lady, much beloved by those who knew her intimately, and took a keen and intelligent interest in current affairs right to the end of her long life.
The funeral took place on Thursday, the Rev. R.A. Fowler conducting a short service at the house, and the interment was in the Newtown-road Cemetery, the deceased being laid to rest in the same grave as her sister, Miss Mary Burrough.
The family mourners were Mr. Francis Burrough and Mr. Geoffrey Burrough (nephews), Mrs. Woods (niece) and Miss Tyrell, others noticed present being Dr. D. Kennedy, Mr. F.C. Hopson, Mrs. Walter Penfold, Miss Parsons, Miss Pratt and Mr. John Freeman.
There was a request for no flowers, but the following wreaths were sent: Messrs. Francis, Geoffrey and Savill Burrough, Mrs Woods and Mrs. Plumb; the Misses Woods; Mrs. Arnold, Miss Tyrell; Dr. and Mrs. Kennedy; and a bunch of some roses from Mr. W. Bushell, gardener to the deceased lady for 24 years.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Camp Hopson and Co. Ltd. |
