A CHILD DROWNED. – On Thursday morning last an inquest was held at the Globe Inn, before Jos. Bunny, Esq., borough coroner touching the death of Hannah Prior, who was drowned in the Canal near the Bridge, Northbrook Street, the day previous. Thomas Prior, father of the deceased, stated that the child was sent to school yesterday afternoon and that he did not know but that she was at school till he saw her dead. – Henry March Lonsdale, a pupil of Mr. Dew’s, Speen, stated that he was fishing at the back of Mr. Nias’ premises, when he saw the deceased and three other little children at play. He heard a female servant caution them playing so near the water. He afterwards heard a splash, and saw the children run away very much frightened. He then saw the deceased at the bottom of the water. James Lawrence came up with a crook and dragged the child out of the water, when she was quite dead. This was about four o’clock, and the deceased was in the water about a quarter of an hour. Verdict: “Accidentally Drowned”. |
