SAMUEL WEBB
DEATH OF MR SAM WEBB
-------------------------------------
OLD NEWBURY TRADESMAN
We regret to record the death of Mr Samuel Webb a member of an old Newbury family, which took place at “Stanmore” Donnington Square on Tuesday. The deceased who was 71 years of age was the second son of the late Mr & Mrs John Webb.
Mr Sam Webb was a tradesman of the old school, who took pride in the well-known grocery business of Messer’s Webb & Sons, the Broadway Newbury which was founded by his grandfather. For some years after the death of their father, Mr Webb (with his brother Mr J B Webb) carried on the business and after its disposal to the present proprietor Mr G A Sage, he still retained connection with the firm until his death.
For nearly fifty years, Mr Webb had journeyed round the Newbury district, being greeted in the homes of rich and poor alike, not merely as “the grocer” but rather as friend, confidant and adviser.
The funeral will take place on Saturday. The service will be at the Wesleyan Church at 3.30, and the interment at the Old Cemetery. It is the deceased’s own wish that there shall be “no mourning or flowers.”
