SAVAGE - November 18th suddenly at Mansion House St., Newbury, Edward George Savage, beloved husband of Eva savage aged 63 "in the midst of life we are in death"
THE LATE MR. EDWARD SAVAGE FUNERAL YESTERDAY It came quite as a shock to his large circle of friends of friends on Friday evening when the death became known of Mr. Edward George Savage, of Mansion House Street. He was 63 years of age and the cause of death was cerebral haemorrhage. But there is not the slightest doubt that his end was one of the sad legacies of the war, for the loss of his only son was a great blow to him and though he showed a brave front in the world, he never really recovered from the effect of the shock. Teddy Savage as he was universally known throughout the town, had a host of friends and not a single enemy. He was deservedly popular amongst the younger fellows of the Guildhall Club, of which he was a very old member; he was one of the best liked men on the bowling green, for he was one of those rare birds who are as cheery when losing as when playing a winning hand; he enjoyed telling a story although when you were going to reach the denouement you never knew. Still he was a true type of sportsman, with a good heart who was always ready to hold out a helping hand to anyone.
Born at Acton, and trained in London, he first went to Manchester, and then to Brussels, as assistant to the late King Leopold's dental surgeon.
It was in the early eighties that he came to Newbury as assistant to Mr. Gilbert Mallet (?), with whom he remained some years before setting up in practice for himself.
He leaves a widow and one daughter to mourn his loss.
The funeral took place yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, the first part of the service being held at the Parish Church. Here quite a number of townspeople gathered together to show their respect for an old friend, the Guildhall Club and especially the Newbury Bowling Club being largely represented. The mourners included Mrs Savage (widow), Miss Savage (daughter), Mrs. Long (sister-in-law), Mr. Jones (brother-in-law) and Mrs. J.W. King and Mr. W. F. W. King (cousins), Mr. Hillier and Mr. S.J. Stillman. Amongst them also noticed present in church were Councillors Adrian Hawker, C. W. Burns, A.C.Elliott, Supt. Maunders, Major Rummings, Messrs W.C. Freemantle, H.A. Carman, P. Wyllie, W.G. Parker, H.W. Legg, Stanley Neate, C. Maggs, F.H. Stillman, Ashley Turner, Hugh Turner, W.H. Paine, T. Carr, F. D. New, J.M. Bell, F. Leader, F. Povey, E, Povey, J. Herbert, H. Stuart, H. Smart, Rupert Adey, W.A. Roberts, H. Snook, M.H. Coleman and others. The service was taken by the Rev. L.R. Majendie both in the church and at the graveside. There were a large number of wreaths from family and friends also from Newbury Bowling Club, the Guildhall Club, and the Junior members of the Guildhall Club.
