SARAH GEORGINA ASHFIELD

“ASHFIELD - Sarah Georgina, wife of William Ashfield of New Square, aged 48 years.”

 

Newbury Weekly News 24th February 1916.

 

[She died 17th February 1916 and was buried  on 22nd.

Book 1899, page 286, No. 9479.  Not listed in Mrs. P.]

 

She was the mother of ALFRED CHARLES ASHFIELD who was killed in action in World War 1 on 16th March 1916.  His picture and story may be found in an article on page 33 of the Newbury Weekly News of 25th August, 2016, and on the West Berkshire War Memorials website:  http://westberkshirewarmemorials.org.uk/texts/stories/WBP01039S.php



The NWN 2016 article adds …

 

Her husband, WILLIAM, died in 1932 aged aged 64.

 

Her son, WILLIAM JOHN, also served in WW1 but survived until 1972 when he died at 77.

 

Her son, ARTHUR JAMES, served in France and survived.

 

Son ERNEST was not old enough for conscription, and not considered fit; died in March 1917, aged 19.

 

Sons HENRY ALBERT and FREDERICK BERTRAM were also too young to serve.

 

FREDERICK subsequently died in WW2 when his ship, HMS DARING, was torpedoed in February 1940.
